Swimming 10 Year Journey (PDF Format 458 Kb)

Glasgow School of Sport's swimming programme focuses on the development of stroke technique and the acquisition of swimming skills, to improve performance in the water. The development of swimming within the School of Sport begins at year one and two with the consolidation of technique and building a solid aerobic base. By the end of years three and four each swimmer will focus on specific event training. During years five and six individual training plans will be developed to meet each swimmers competition calendar.
At the School of Sport each swimmer will enhance their swimming programme with a comprehensive conditioning programme tailored to each swimmer’s ability. The programme is generic in the first two years focusing on core body strength and flexibility. As the swimmer progresses from third year they will be introduced to a weights programme specific to their physical development.
The training is complemented by a club-led competition programme with regular participation in races at the highest appropriate levels. Progress will be achieved through coordinating School of Sport programmes with the pupil’s own club training. Glasgow School of Sport swim coach, Andrena Hammond, blends her annual training plan to compliment the pupils’ own swimming clubs to maximise the full benefit of training, competition and social opportunities.
