Image of School of Sport BuildingScotland's first school dedicated to sporting excellence has been developed at Bellahouston Academy and is a first for Glasgow and a first for Sport. It's the only school in Great Britain which helps up and coming sports stars to become better at their chosen sport.

There are lots of talented sportsmen and women in Scotland and the School of Sport aims to nurture that talent and provide the best possible opportunities for development in the country.

Bellahouston Academy is proud that the Glasgow School of Sport is based here. There are currently over nine hundred pupils at the school, one hundred and thirty two of whom are specialist sports pupils.

The School of Sport was set up in 1999 and is funded by the Scottish Government. It is run as a partnership between Education and Social Work Services and Glasgow Sport.

Sports pupils receive coaching within the school day, which is carefully timetabled around their academic subjects such as Mathematics and English.

Specialist provision is intended to ensure that such pupils are given the best opportunity to develop their sporting talents as part of their School Education. Great care is taken to provide pupils with every opportunity to maximise not only their sporting but also their academic potential.

The School of Sport has five sports specialisms, athletics, badminton, gymnastics, hockey and swimming. Pupils specialise in one sport and entry to the School of Sport is by selection only.

There are lots of talented sportsmen and women in Scotland and the School of Sport aims to nurture that talent and provide the best opportunities for development in the country.

The School of Sport offers one of the best high performance coaching teams in the country. These coaches have competed or coached at a national level in their sport and many have received top coaching awards. The high performance coaching team develops and delivers individualised programmes to pupils and has achieved some outstanding results.

Over sixty pupils have represented Scotland in their sport. International highlights include gymnast Lynne Donaghy who competed for Scotland at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, swimmers Rebecca Hillis and Charles Mills winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2005, hockey player Kenny Bain winning a silver medal at the Youth Olympics in Australia in 2007, athlete Matthew Turner winning gold at the Celtic Games and badminton players Stephen McPhail and Kenny Young winning the prestigious Belgian Junior Under 19 Boys double event.

A sports nutritionist and sport psychologist also visit the School of Sport on a regular basis. The National Stadium Sports Medicine Centre at Hampden provides injury diagnosis and rehabilitation for pupils who become injured.

The School of Sport works closely with its partners to ensure that pupils are fully supported on the pathway to national and international success.
