Pupil Pathway Advisory Group

Image of Higher and Further Education Routes Pie Chart Glasgow School of Sport Pupil Pathway Advisory Group

Glasgow School of Sport has a Pupil Pathway Advisory Group which brings together many of the key individuals and organisations that work together to ensure that talented sports performers are fully supported throughout their
sporting and academic career.

All graduates from Glasgow School of Sport pursue positive career destinations, every one is in employment or further study. 67% of graduates have gone on to higher or further education with the most popular courses being physiotherapy, sports coaching and sports science. The chart below shows which higher and further education routes they are choosing.

Universities and colleges are developing strong links with the School. Glasgow Caledonian University for example was one of the first universities to recognise the calibre of sports pupils graduating from the School of Sport and a memorandum of understanding has been established between both organisations. The University of the West of Scotland has taken similar steps and both organisations benefit from the exchange of teaching and coaching expertise and this year a number of students have been allocated placements at Glasgow School of Sport.

Developing strong sporting pathways is an equally high priority for the advisory group and Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport, Sportscotland, Culture and Sport Glasgow, clubs and many other individuals and organisations are working hard to ensure that sport is a life long interest and that long term athlete development pathways are in place.

All pupils undertake coaching qualifications while at the School and, to date, over 140 pupils have qualified as sports leaders and coaches.

The advisory group includes pupil and parent representatives and their feedback is critical to informing future programmes and services.

The vast majority of graduates continue to combine sport with study or employment and many have pursued careers abroad, examples include Steven Percy and Ciaran Crawford (pictured), two of the hockey programme graduates who are now living in Holland and playing for Dutch side Overgangsklasse in Groningen. Kareena Marshall, a badminton graduate, who went on to play hockey (yes, hockey) for Scotland and is now a qualified physiotherapist working in New Zealand. Rebecca Hillis is on a swim scholarship in Texas.

Glasgow School of Sport would like to thank all its Advisory Panel members for their support and commitment. Their experience, knowledge and skills are helping to create first class opportunities for talented sports men and women throughout their academic and sporting career.
