Claire Leaves for the USA
This summer saw a Glasgow School of Sport athlete be the first from the School to take up the opportunity of an athletics scholarship to an American university. Claire McAuley has recently jetted out to Illinois to take up a four year scholarship at Northern Illinois University who have a female athletics programme.
In the build up to the move Glasgow School of Sport coach Norrie Hay and Huskies (Illinois nickname) coach Mark McConnaghy have been in regular contact and synchronised Claire's training programme to allow her to hit the ground running upon her arrival in America.
Norrie Hay commented, "Claire has been a pleasure to coach during her time at the the School. She has a great attitude and I'm sure she will be a big success in the American system."

Charlotte McShane Returns from Australia
Recently, the Glasgow School of Sport Athletics Programme was delighted to receive a visit from a former pupil. Charlotte McShane, who emigrated to Australia with her family in 2005, dropped in for a visit whilst in Scotland. Charlotte, who represented Scottish Schools over cross country and on the track whilst at the School, was back in her homeland competing in a Triathlon.
Charlotte, was already dabbling with triathlon before she moved to Australia but really found her niche there, so much so that she has recently been included in the Victoria Institute of Sport and is ranked inside the top ten in Australia. She is spending the summer in Europe gaining competition experience and hoping to increase her world ranking in the process.
Charlotte finished a superb third in the Strathclyde Park event, one of her best ever international results following that up with a fifth place in Morocco, despite being involved in a crash on her bike.

Head Coach Norrie Hay commented, "I coached Charlotte when she was at the School and I'm not surprised that her drive and ambition has taken her to this level. She was always focused and determined to succeed. We were all delighted to see her again and hear of her success and also that she believes we had a small part to play in her achievements."

Vila Real Athletics Training Camp
In conjunction with the Scottish Athletics Commonwealth Games squad, Glasgow School of Sport athletes travelled to Vila Real on the Portuguese Algarve to participate in a warm weather training camp.
The GSOS athletes were scheduled to remain for seven days, however the flight issues related to the Icelandic volcano ensured that we remained in Portugal for the entire fourteen day camp.

The camp, hopefully the first of a regular series, was extremely successful with all four participating athletes, Lee Wilson, Claire McAuley, Jade Barclay and Caitlin Vaughan gaining valuable experience in a number of key areas such as training loads, nutrition, recovery strategies and the key training principles.
The chance to train with and watch athletes, some of whom have competed in World & European Cross Country Championships and World Youth Track & Field Championships, was of tremendous benefit.
As well as the daily training session, runs, pool recovery and core stability sessions, SAL also put on evening educational sessions. The most popular of these was undoubtedly the biomechanical assessments filmed during track sessions and then reviewed on the hotel’s “large screen” television in the evening as all the athletes got to see what they actually look like when they run!
Scottish Athletics is planning to return next year and the Glasgow School of Sport is looking forward to being part of this fantastic experience once again.
