Spotlight on Amy Hamilton

Amy Hamilton is one of our young best female prospects in Scottish and Great Britain weightlifting and has been lifting for around two years now and is 16 years of age. Amy started lifting after leaving her long gymnastic career behind her at the Glasgow School of Sport at Bellahouston Academy to take lifting up seriously when it was realised she had a talent for it.

Amy still attends the Glasgow School of Sport for some of her coaching with her training time split with the Palace of Arts Weightlifting Club where Amy is a member and is based in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park.

Since taking the sport up Amy has now won British age group titles and has also competed for Great Britain at the European Youth Championships last year in 2007 in Italy and gained a respectable 11th Place in a very experienced competition where the average age was 17 years.

Amy’s title haul includes: British under 17 champion 2007, British under 18 champion 2007, British school champion 2008 and British Junior champion 2007 (under 20).

Amy was selected to compete for Great Britain again in the European Youths being held in Caen, France but had to decline due to exams. The British Youth championships were held in Bristol on 3 rd May 2008 and Amy once again took 1 st place setting some new bests in the process. The new World Class weightlifting body has recognised Amy's potential by inviting her to the newly formed World Class Weightlifting Youth Squad.

Amy has a very bright future in weightlifting and has now achieved the qualifying standard to be selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games for Scotland, being held in Pune, India in October 2008.

Amy, if she is selected to compete for Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India, is at this moment, according to the current Commonwealth youth rankings, a good medal prospect for us. Raymond Cavanagh, Amy’s coach at the School of Sport is confident that she is well on course for her target of the senior Commonwealth Games in India in 2010 and on home turf in Glasgow in 2014 - and what a time to win a medal!
