Sports Psychology

Image of Amy Hamilton concentrating on her liftSport psychology is the use of psychology theory in a sport setting to enhance performance. Psychology provides a structure for maximising opportunities and provides a focus for taking responsibility. It aims to help identify individual strengths and weaknesses as a way of being objective about performance. Mental tools and strategies are then targeted to control thoughts, emotions and behaviour which ultimately give a sports person control over their performance. Taking control of, for example, being focused on the right thing at the right time enables the pupil to create the ideal performance state for them to train and compete at their best.

At Glasgow School of Sport group curriculum sessions are provided to introduce, educate and consolidate the use of mental skills, strategies and techniques in sport. The programme has been developed to provide a progression, which builds on self-awareness, confidence and motivation from years one to six.

Specific sessions and content will vary each year depending on the needs of the sport and the individual sports pupil.

Individual performance psychology is available to support and enhance group work for individuals identified by coaches who would benefit from more specific and tailored support.
