Goals in the Net

July 2007 - European Youth Championships

Glasgow School of Sport had 6 players represented at the European Youth Championships at Peffermill. Over the week the boys had some up and down performances beating England 3-1 on the opening day. Solid defensive performances by Wei Adams and Laurie McKelvie provided a platform for Kenny Bain to score 2 goals in the opening game.

The boys under 18 squad then went down to Belgium 5-1 in their 2nd match and then narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot losing to Russia by 5 goals to 4. In the cross over games the Scots defeated France 4-2 and then narrowly edged Ireland by 3 goals to 2, cementing their position in the Elite top 8 nations for next year's event. Kenny Bain won both the player of the tournament award and the top scorers award with an impressive 10 goals. Well done to Kenny Bain, Laurie McKelvie, John Martin and Wei Adams who deserve their recognition after several years of hard training at the School.

In the Girls Tournament Scotland had a very tough group being matched up with the favourites Germany, Spain and England. It was a baptism of fire for Amy Gibson and Kristine Ayling as they foiled countless German attacks limiting the tournament favourites to a 5 goals to 1 victory. Losses to Spain 1-0, England 2-0 , Lithuania 1-0 and Belgium 2-0 followed. Overall Kristine and Amy performed very well in a tournament given that the Scottish Girls were playing against the top nations in Europe. The team improved in every game but lacked the "killer punch" up front to score. Well done to Kristine and Amy who have worked very hard over the last couple of years and consequently were well worthy of their inclusion in the squad.
