Ten Quick Questions On Delhi by Ryan McKee

What 5 words would you use to describe Delhi?

Different – fun – exciting - lively and loud!

What was your most exciting experience performing?

My first floor performance I thought thank god I got through it! The second time I performed it I did it perfectly.

W hat did you learn about yourself?

When I really focus and do my best it can come together on the day.

What was your scariest moment?

When I was just about to step up for my first piece - Parallel Bars.

Most frustrating?

It has to be my vault. I slipped on the spring board and landed on my face. I had being doing it perfectly in training. It was really embarrassing as well as frustrating!

What performance of the games impressed you the most?

I never expected any of the gymnasts from India to do well and they walked away with two silver medals.

In what way has the Glasgow School of Sport helped you get to the games?

It provided lots of extra training and different coaches with different perspectives. The financial support has really helped too.

What message would you give to other aspiring Glasgow School of Sport pupils?

Stick in, listen to the coaches, train your hardest and you will get the best outcome.

What's the focus for you now in your sport?

Do well in the British and go to 2014 and win some medals.

Lasting memory?

Walking out into the hall for the finals and seeing the crowd. I could hear my family and friends cheering and I thought this is it!

August 2009 - First GSoS Athlete Enters the West of Scotland Institute for Sport

S6 pupil Ryan McKee has become the first GSOS gymnast to be nominated by Scottish Gymnastics for WSIS support.

His acceptance into the programme at the West of Scotland Institute for Sport was based on his performances over the last 12 months and his future potential to achieve success at major championships. Ryan is currently training as part of the Scottish Commonwealth Games 2010 squad and is rated as a potential medalist for the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow.

The support through the Institute Network will help Ryan to achieve excellence in everything he does, from meeting challenging performance targets in competition to managing himself to the highest professional standards.

To support Ryan in his ventures, TSB and Laidlaw Scott have provided him with some sponsorship towards kit and travel over the coming year, 2009/10.

Gold Medal for Craig Downie

S1 pupil Craig Downie took the gold medal with his partner Mitchell at the Saltney Sports Acrobatics Open 2009. Craig travelled to Wales with a team from the City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club. Amongst tough competition the team came third overall, beating one of the top clubs in Great Britain, Harefield Academy. A great result for Craig after putting in a really hard year of gymnastics training at the School.

Britain's Most Powerful Youth

Last weekend, Colette travelled to London to compete in “Britain’s Most Powerful Youth” competition. Entering the 16 – 17 year old age category, Colette had to participate in a number of physical tests, including throwing a medicine ball, shuttle run and weight lifting. She achieved first place in her age category, as well as a personal best in the weight lifting, where she lifted more than her body weight. A truly remarkable achievement!

British Silver Medallist

Ryan McKee came home from the British Championships last weekend, 1-2 November 2008, with a silver medal on Vault in the Under 16 Age Group.  He placed 11th overall and 6th on Floor. This outstanding result means that he is now eligible to enter the West of Scotland Institute, providing support in areas such as physio, nutrition and sport psychology.

Ryan’s result on Vault took him through to the Masters final, where the top boys across all the age groups from Under 12 to Senior compete against each other.  In this event, Ryan achieved 5th place. Marius Gherman, Coach at City of Glasgow GC, said “This result puts Ryan as one of the best Vaulters in the whole of Great Britain. He is now being considered as a Floor and Vault specialist for British Junior teams and could be a good prospect as a finalist for Commonwealth Games 2010.”

Ryan can been seen below helping to promote the World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships 2008.

Culture and Sport Glasgow hosted the World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championship from 3-12 October 2008 at the Kelvinhall International Sports Arena. Strathclyde Passenger Transport supported this event by providing free return journeys for spectators.

October 2008 - Radio Scotland Sports Weekly

Janice Buchanan and Colette Will were invited, along with their partner Lee, to promote the World Sports Acrobatics Championships during BBC Radio Scotland’s Sports weekly programme. They showed a variety of skills demonstrating the discipline of sports acrobatics. During their demonstration two competitors from the actual event evaluated the skills.

This was the first time ever that a sport like gymnastics has been analysed and promoted on the radio! Footage from the weekly programme is available on our Podcasts page.

June 2008 - Glasgow to Rostov-on-Don Fundraising Display

Following the successful visit of coaches and gymnasts from the Olympic Reserve School in Rostov-on-Don to Glasgow in May 2008 preparations are now underway for a reciprocal visit to Russia by a party from the Glasgow School of Sport and the City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club. To facilitate this visit much needed funds are sought.

To get the fund-raising off the ground, Philippa Musikant built on the connection made with the Borders Store at Glasgow Fort and arranged for the gymnasts involved in the exchange, together with other gymnasts from the Glasgow School of Sport and the City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club, to take part in a fund-raising display.

Saturday 28 June 2008 was a typical Glasgow day. It was raining! With the mini-bus full from floor to ceiling with equipment and buckets in tow, we set off for a lunch-time start at Glasgow Fort. As we arrived the skies cleared and the area was set up for action. Working in rotation, the gymnasts, some of the best in Scotland, showed off their gymnastics skills and their ability to work together as a team, to entertain the crowd, to speak to the public about the fund-raising and ultimately to bring in money.

Over £400 was raised in just 3 hours with just one interruption from the rain! A great day was had by all and an outstanding result for the exchange programme that we will definitely repeat.

Grateful thanks go to all the gymnasts, especially those not directly benefitting from the funds raised, their parents for giving up their afternoon and helping load up the van in the pouring rain and, of course, to Philippa Musikant and John Hill.
