Facilities

The Glasgow School of Sport is based at Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow, Scotland.

Image of pupils training in the sports hallIn October 2002 the School of Sport moved into a purpose built, state of the art sports facility built as part of Glasgow’s Project 2002 programme, a PPP partnership with 3ED.

The development of specialist sports facilities on site at Bellahouston Academy is a major boost to the School of Sport. This facility offers sports pupils a first class training and competition environment designed to international specifications.

The facility is on two levels.

On the ground floor there is a main sports hall, which comprises six badminton courts, four of which are specified to international competition standard. Care has been taken to design the hall to top badminton specifications including the spacing between the courts, the floor surface, the colour of the walls allowing high shuttle definition and low level lighting perfect for high performance.

The main sports hall also doubles as a full size hockey court and hockey and badminton pupils share its use during their indoor season. Court markings for hockey and badminton only - keep the focus on high performance in two of our key sports.

The ground floor also has staff offices where the Director, support staff and are based plus changing rooms and pupil lockers.

On the top floor there is a fully equipped Strength and Conditioning Gym. This gym is fully equipped with a wide range of equipment including free weights, Olympic weightlifting bars, treadmills, body bars; squat racks and specialised conditioning equipment for each sport such as swim benches and Vasa trainers. The gym has an open conditioning area with a sprung wooden floor and a variety of conditioning classes are held here such as relaxation, flexibility, circuits and aerobic classes.

A Treatment and Anthropometric Testing room is located on the top floor, which is also used as a quiet area for one-to-one meetings with pupils and staff and by a range of support service providers including sports nutrition and sport psychology experts.

This is undoubtedly a centre of excellence and pupils from the School of Sport, the wider school and associated performance clubs, squads and groups are all benefiting from a facility designed for their sport and to meet their needs.

The coaching staff benefit from not only a high performance centre on their door step but having more time to devote to coaching with the need to travel to other specialist facilities in the city reduced. These new facilities strengthen the School of Sport's position and growing reputation as a National Centre of Excellence.

The School of Sport is extremely well positioned at Bellahouston Academy with training and competition facilities of an international standard, including a fully rigged national gymnastics centre at Bellahouston Leisure Centre and water based synthetic hockey pitch at Bellahouston Park, located within walking distance of the school. Pupils also travel by School of Sport Minibus to specialist sports facilities of world class standard including Scotstoun, Kelvinhall and Tollcross Leisure Centres.
