Sunday Mail Sports Awards
A Special Judges Award was made to the Commonwealth Games Bid Team at the Sunday Mail Sports Awards. First Minister Alex Salmond presented the award saying "This is a great day to be First Minister. This is a unique achievement, one that comes once in a lifetime. This is Scotland's chance to show the world what we're capable of. To get this endorsement from the international community is incredible."

9 November 2007 - We did it!
Some of us were fortunate to be present at one of the key venues for the announcement of the host city for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
The tension and excitement was unbelievable and then...elation, celebration and pride in being Scottish and pride in the City of Glasgow. Glasgow had won the bid and with it the recognition and respect it deserves.
Winning the bid is of course only the start. Ahead lies seven years of hard work to turn vision into reality and our role is integral to success.

Sport can transform lives and inspire participants and spectators alike.

The Commonwealth Games now provides a focal point for Scottish sport at all levels. It can involve more people in activity, improve health and fuel the dream of competing on home ground at one of the world's most important sporting events. The School of Sport is under no illusion that only the best athletes will be selected to compete for Scotland. We want to play our part in adding to the 300 medals won by Scots at the Commonwealth Games since they started. Our mission is 'to develop the sporting champions of the future.' In many of the 2014 sports, the future champions will come from our schools, and one school in particular, the Glasgow School of Sport at Bellahouston Academy. We aim to nurture and develop our future champions by continuing to work with key agencies. We will support young people on their path to excellence by providing top quality coaching, leading programmes and support services.
