Ireland and Scotland Share Titles at GSOS Under 10 Tournament

This year’s Glasgow School of Sport Under 10 tournament attracted players from Ireland, England and Scotland. In total 34 players competed in the event with competitors displaying spirit and sportsmanship as well as being highly competitive. In all four disciplines the event was run in pools with all players going forward into an A or B knockout event. This format has proved popular at the younger age and ensures a maximum amount of games for every player.

In the boys’ singles Glasgow player Matthew Grimley made it through his semi-final with a 21/5 win over Jack Riddell, while Christopher Grimley won his match 21/15 against Lloyd Holland setting up a final which could be the first of many to come from the talented twins. On this occasion Christopher ran out a close winner 21/18.

Another set of twins, this time Irish girls Rachael and Rebekka Woods, who travelled from Lisburn Rackets Club in Northern Ireland, were to prove tough opponents for their Scottish counterparts. Rachael reached the final of the A singles while Rebekka competed in the final of the B event. Rebekka was runner up in the B event while Rachael won her final match against Rothesay player Sarah Sidebottom with a scoreline of 21/19.

It was then no surprise to see both sets of twins competing for titles in the doubles events. Firstly, the boys’ event saw Matthew and Christopher dominate with a strong performance over Ewan Laing and Jack Riddell with a scoreline of 21/14. The girls’ doubles was played in one pool and was a very close affair. After pairs beating each other in the pool Rachael and Rebekka Woods were declared winners with Lauren Middleton and Sarah Sidebottom runners up.

So far we have been used to watching Christopher and Matthew doing well at competitions however having two sets of twins competing and winning in the competition was very unusual. Overall the players competing on the day put a huge effort into their matches and enjoyed the competition and social aspects as well. It is great to see so many young players with this enthusiasm for the game and a desire to improve.

Finally, huge thanks must be conveyed to Yonex UK for their continued support of Glasgow School of Sport competitions. Also thanks to parents, volunteers and School of Sport pupils for their work leading up to and on the day of competition. The next competition will be held on Saturday, 9 January 2010 and will see 55 players battle it out for the Under 13 titles.

East Ayrshire Sports Awards

The East Ayrshire Sports Council awards ceremony was held on Thursday 10 December 2009. May Fulton of Hurlford Badminton Club was the winner of the SALSC Service to Sport award which is given to someone who has shown outstanding commitment, dedication and enthusiasm in their sport over a considerable period. May has been coaching at Hurlford for over 30 years at a club that has had players succeed at National Championship level, in Scottish Schools Championships, as well as in Anglo-Scottish competitions. She has also played a huge part in Ayrshire schools coaching.

Emma Cook (Mauchline) was the winner of the Performance of the Year by an individual who has shown a high level of performance throughout the year, a significant success in competition and notable step up in development as a player. This was following her UK School Games title and her Bank of Scotland National Doubles titles at Under 17 and Under 19 level.

Adam Hall (Mauchline) was runner up in the Individual Performance category having achieved a further five national titles this year – singles, doubles and mixed at Under 13 and doubles and mixed at Under 15 taking his total to ten.

As part of the new Talented Athlete Programme, awards were also made to Gregor McVean (Mauchline), Lewis Gallacher (Kilmarnock), Callum MacMillan (Mauchline), James Milton (Mauchline), Kaity Hall (Mauchline), Adam Hall and Emma Cook.

It’s nice to see the hard work put in by both May and all the players recognised by the local authority.

University Journalist Interviews Kirsty Gilmour

Kirsty is Scotland’s Under 19 and Under 17 Girls’ Singles Champion and has been for the past two years. As a junior, the 16 year old has achieved a great deal, already this season she has won the Langenfield Cup in Germany, the UK Schools Games Singles title and reached the Girls’ Singles Semi-finals at the Gentofte Grand Prix in Denmark. In addition to competing at junior level, Kirsty has stepped into the senior arena to find a bigger challenge.

“It’s a lot different going to play against juniors than it is going to play against seniors, because I’m, like, top against the juniors but you go against the seniors and your bottom again. Everything becomes faster and quicker and harder.”

The move from junior to senior is challenging but Gilmour has adjusted her short term goals to cater for the transition. “I just try to focus on certain little things. I don’t necessarily need to win the matches but just to perform at seniors gives you a boost.”

Kirsty has been boosted by her interaction with older players since she began the sport. Aged four, her dad Brian started taking Kirsty with him when coaching school clubs. Her earliest memory of badminton is of the club at St. Patrick’s (now St. Andrew’s) High School in Coatbridge. One Thursday evening, five year-old Kirsty was handed a mini-racket by her dad and asked to join the teenage boys in trying to fire a shuttlecock at a line on the wall. She vividly remembers that she was the only person to succeed in the task.

This memory has possibly remained resilient because the triumph appeals to Kirsty’s self-confessed competitive nature, a trait she accredits to her dad. When asked what motivates her, she hesitates for a moment: “I’m just really competitive I don’t know how to not try. I can’t not give my all in training or tournaments.”

There is a clear indication that her competitiveness is the engine behind her motivation, “When I lose at a tournament I come back from that tournament and I train harder than ever just so I can beat that person the next time or play better than I did the last time at least.”

Her dedication to badminton is such that she finds it difficult to enjoy even a week away from training. “It’s terrible when I go on holiday because I constantly think, I should be training just now. This isn’t good.”

The ultimate dream for Kirsty is to win Olympic Gold and claim a medal at Glasgow 2014. These are reasonable ambitions for the teenager that she holds in high regard with an unassuming yet positive frame of mind, “Going into these senior tournaments I got a little disheartened. I’m still under 17 so I’ve got a long way to go. I’ve got a good ten more years at this so there’s still time.”

Annual St. Andrews Night Held at Glasgow Satellite Squad

Over 30 Glasgow Squad players and their parents had an extra special St. Andrew’s night this year when the new Scottish International Singles Champion, Susan Egelstaff, along with fellow international players, Gordon Thomson, Kieran Merrilees, Watson Briggs and Paul Van Rietvelde joined them at the Glasgow School of Sport for a fun games night.

All wearing some tartan or Scottish colours, the wee ones got to play with and against their idols; it was a busy hall with lots of smiling faces and cries of “can I play with …”

Image of the Satellite Squad on St. Andrew's Night
Satellite Squad on St. Andrew's Night

The second half of the night gave the older squad and some county players a chance to play with the senior players and we were also joined by Diana Koleva, the Junior High Performance Coach.

The Committee would like to thank Dylan (Yonex UK Ltd), Diana, Jill O’Neill (Culture and Sport Glasgow) and the players for giving up their evening as it was much appreciated. Thanks are also due to the parents who supplied a great buffet, John Holland for putting on the games – not an easy task when everyone wants to play with their favourite international player – and to Brian Gannon from Rapid Repairs who came along with their stall to allow the players to try out new racquets or try on clothing especially with Christmas around the corner.

Smash Hit Kirsty Aims for Delhi 2010

Clydesdale Bank November Athlete of the Month Announced

Just 16 years of age, and therefore still playing at junior level, Kirsty Gilmour from Bothwell in Lanarkshire has been identified as a member of badminton’s elite squad aiming for selection for Team Scotland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. This, backed by a string of recent on-court achievements both at home and abroad, has seen her named as the Clydesdale Bank Athlete of the Month for November receiving £500 towards her training and competition costs.

The scheme is being run with Clydesdale Bank as part of their programme of support to Team Scotland and is open to athletes in any of the 17 participating sports who are eligible to represent Scotland at next year’s Games in Delhi. Athletes will be nominated by their respective sports and will have demonstrated outstanding performances during the build-up to the Games.

Collecting her award Kirsty said: “It is great to be recognised for what I have achieved after a lot of hard work and the £500 from Clydesdale Bank will be really useful, particularly to help with the cost of restringing rackets which is a big part of the budget.”

Given Kirsty’s family connections with the sport it is hardly surprising that she seems destined to follow in their successful footsteps. Her father Brian, who was the national junior coach, first put a racket in her hand when she was just four years of age and although she gave both gymnastics and football a go, it was to the badminton court that she returned. She is also spurred on by her uncle, David Gilmour, who was capped50 times for Scotland at badminton between 1989 and 2008.

A fiercely competitive young woman, Kirsty has elected to play singles where she feels firmly in control of her own destiny, with no one else to blame if things go wrong. But despite her keen desire to win, off court she feels the friendly nature of the sport is its biggest attraction.

Kirsty attends the Glasgow School of Sport at Bellahouston Academy, and is coached by Craig Robertson a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist from Manchester. She believes there are real benefits to training in this unique setting which offers a fully integrated programme of education and high performance sport training, with the added bonus for badminton that it is all one site.

“They are a lot more understanding about our needs to go training and getting time off for competitions, whilst still making sure we keep up with our work” said Kirsty. “My coach even makes me take my homework with me when I am away.”

Kirsty’s performances during season 2008/09 were consistently high: not only did she win the national u17 women’s singles title (playing in her own age group), but she also holds the national u19 women’s single title. At the end of the 2008/09 season, she was number one singles player in both u17 and u19 age groups nationally and 12 in the Scottish senior rankings. However despite domestic success Kirsty believes it was her unexpected appearance in the final of the Belgian Junior u19 tournament, where she lost in the final to the top seed, which was her great achievement.

The 2009/10 season which got underway in August, has seen Kirsty off to a flying start. At the highly regarded Langenfeld Junior tournament, held in Germany during August, she was women’s singles winner (Under 17), despite only being seeded to reach the quarter finals. This is a superb win as competition is of the highest standard and it is also the first time a Scottish junior has won at Langenfeld. In early September, Kirsty went on to win the UK Schools Games singles title against the best in Britain. Her first taste of a multi-sport Games was a positive one, and will be a good experience should Kirsty find herself in Delhi next October.

“The UK School Games was great with lots of people turning up from different places all in team kit. You go and compete with the badminton people and when you have finished you get to watch and mix with other sports.”

With the rest of the season focused on booking her place on the Team Scotland plane for Delhi, Kirsty is excited about the prospect and feels there is a great future ahead.

“It would a great opportunity to go to Delhi and get some experience which would stand me in good stead for Glasgow 2014 where I would love to get a medal. I am even hoping I might just make the team for London 2012.”

Clydesdale Bank’s support for this scheme will ensure that athletes training and competing at this level will benefit from extra financial support to help them achieve their goals.  This competition is a great additional incentive to the athletes as they strive over the next ten months to book their place on the team.

European Junior Champs under 17

Scotland sent eight players to this event in Slovenia. Initially five of the eight were from Glasgow School of Sport until Gregor McVean withdrew due to having tonsillitis less than 24 hours before departure. Gregors bad luck led to Edinburgh Edward Cogliano being called up.

Kirsty Gilmour and Rebekka Findlay of S5, Lewis Gallacher of S6 and Josh Neil of S3 all competed in both team and individual events. Scotland were in Denmark’s group with Croatia and Norway. After beating Croatia 3-2 and Norway 5-0 The team played off against Denmark to reach the quarter finals stage. As always Denmark proved to be a tough team beating Scotland 4-1 and eventually went on to win the championships.

Kirsty in Last Eight of Individual Event

After the tough team event all players then competed in the individual championships. Kirsty Gilmour lost out to Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt in 2 sets. Although seeded number 2 , Kirsty was unable to produce the same performance that saw her beat Line in the team match. Kirsty partnered Rebekka Findlay in the doubles event reaching the second round with a brilliant win over Russian couple Evgenia Kosetskaya and Karina Nazarova before losing out to Dutch duo of Helkema and Mahullette who were seeded to reach the semi finals. Rebekka won her first singles against Iceland’s Maria Arnadottir and then lost out to Swedish player Nydren-Strandberg in 3 sets.

On the boys side Lewis Gallacher was seeded in the mixed doubles event to reach the last 16. On the way to the last 16 Lewis and partner Caitlin Pringle won there earlier matches in 2 sets before meeting eventual Silver Medallists Antonsen and Madsen of Denmark. In the boys doubles Lewis and Josh Neil Bartusis and Plavin of Lithuiania in 3 close sets.

Josh Neil competed in the singles event and came up against a tough opponent early on in round 1. Josh lost out to Aitor Aimaz of Spain in 3 sets. This experience will be a valuable one for all the players and especially for Josh who will be able to compete at under 17 age group in 2 years time.

From a school of Sport perspective the experience at this level is so valuable for young players and will no doubt push them on to achieve more opportunities of this level and compete for medals in the future. Congratulations to Josh, Lewis , Rebekka and Kirsty in representing their country.

Josh and Adam Take 2 Titles Each at Nationals

7 October 2009

Under 15

S3 pupils Josh Neil and Adam Hall were in great form as they both won two titles each at the Nationals. Josh initially beat Adam in the semi-finals of the singles before going on to win in a two set final against Jordan Gilvear. Both Jordan and Adam played well against Josh as all three boys led the way at this age group. After many tough Nationals, congratulations to Josh on this victory! Callum Riddell and Calum Stevenson also performed well, both losing out to Fraser Whillans in the two rounds before the semi-finals.

Adam and Josh paired up in the doubles to win a very tough match against Jordan and partner Fraser Whillans. Adam and Josh started strongly as Jordan and Fraser were adjusting to the pace. Towards the end of the second set all four boys were playing some great rallies as Josh went on to mark his second title of the day. In the semi-finals both Callum and Calum played well and showed their improvement over the summer. It was the first time both boys have played at the Nationals on a Sunday and looked very much at home.

In the “Mixed”, Adam and Sophie Morrison surprised Josh and Heather McPherson in the semi-finals and went on to win the title over Hannah Morrison and James Milton. Congratulations to Adam on his second title and again he showed great promise for the future as he is able to compete in Under 15 event next season. Jordan also reached the semi-finals of the “Mixed” with singles champion Lucy Nevin.

Overall all five pupils played well and showed that they have improved since last season. Well done for their efforts in training and in competition.

Kirsty Retains Under 19 Singles Title

Kirsty Gilmour continued her winning ways in the under 19 age group as she took the title without losing a set. Kirsty had a semi-final clash with S6 pupil Fiona Archibald and a final match with ex-pupil Kaity Hall. Kirsty played well throughout the event and did not allow any opponent to gain double figures.

In the “Doubles”, Kirsty and partner Kirsten Geals were less fortunate. They reached the final to play Emma Cook and Caitlin Pringle, current UKSG Champions at Under 17 level. After a long match Emma and Caitlin won in three sets to record their first victory at Under 19.

Gregor McVean and partner Mathew Carder reached the semi-finals of the boys’ doubles. Their opponents, Craig Morrison and Patrick MacHugh, had beaten them in last year’s Nationals and went on to record a two set win on this occasion before taking the title in three sets against former pupils Stephen Stewart and Danny Leinster.

Final Thoughts…

All players on the Glasgow School of Sport programme competed at the Nationals. There were many good performances throughout the whole weekend as younger players also competed to gain experience for the future. Congratulations to all for their excellent work ethic and continued efforts during training and competitions.

Ex-pupils Competing Well

At the recent Glasgow School of Sport Under 12 competition, Holly Newall and Alex Dunn won their respective singles titles. Good Luck to Scotland at the UK School Games

The UKSG will take place on 3 – 6 September 2009 in Wales. Gregor McVean, Lewis Gallacher and Kirsty Gilmour will join the rest of the Scottish team to compete in this annual event. All players have competed at this level before and can look forward to playing well after a great summers training. Good luck to the individuals and to the team.

The draw can be viewed on the Tournament Software website.

Nottingham Gold Under 17

Ben Torrance made a great start to the season as he played one of his best matches to date. Ben who is first year at under 17 won his group with a hard fought 3 set victory over Elliot Miles of Hertfordshire. Ben went on to lose in 2 close sets to Tim Stranks of Gloucestershire who is currently on the England Performance Programme. Ben was outstanding and played great singles with patience and very few unforced errors.

Josh Neil moved up from his own age at under 15 and competed well in this event. Josh had chances against the six foot Ryan McCarthy from Hertfordshire as he lost again in 2 close sets. Lewis Gallacher lost out to Jack Smith in the group stages and will get a chance at revenge at this weeks UK School Games in Wales. Gregor McVean won through his group and lost out to England team member Tom Wolfendon.

Doubles events saw Ben and Josh, Gregor and Matthew Carder and the partnership of Lewis and Bruce Doran all lose out in the quarter final stages. In the mixed doubles Lewis Gallacher partners Caitlin Gilmour before losing out to Tom Wolfendon and Holly Smith in the last 16 while Josh and Rebekka Findlay had a tough 3 set loss to George Li and Lexi Gilders. Both mixed pairs showed a good understanding in mixed doubles and should progress in this discipline as the season develops.

Rebekka Findlay was the only GSoS girl in the group. Rebekka had a great comeback and win over England Team Member Chloe Birch of Yorkshire. Chloe had beaten Rebekka in previous meetings but Rebekka managed to come back from 11/4 and 16/8 down to win a very hard fought match. In the knock out round of 16 Rebekka lost out to Buckinghamshire’s Raveesha Fernando. Rebekka paired up with Caitlin Gilmour and reached the quarter finals before losing out to eventual winners Emily Westwood and Lauren Bromley.

Congratulations to Caitlin Pringle and Emma Cook as they progressed through the rounds with wins over Mina Clark and Sophie Sankey in the quarter finals and Sophie Brown and Holly Smith in the semi finals. In the final Caitlin and Emma led 17/15 in the first set before losing 21/16. The second set saw Emily Westwood and Lauren Bromley show that they had more experience than their opponents and closed out the match 21/11 to take the title. Caitlin also reached the quarter finals in the girls singles before losing out to the talented Sophie Sankey.

Overall and interesting start to the season and will give the players attending the UK School Games some good competitive practice prior to the event in Wales.

Gold for Kirsty in Germany

S5 Pupil Kirsty Gilmour once again demonstrated that her development in the game is moving in the right direction when she won Gold at the recent under 17 Yonex Langenfeld Cup. Kirsty managed to beat 3 Danish players en route to the title with the Danes being amongst the top in Europe. Kirsty came up against top seed Mette Paulsen in the "quarters" where she won an astonishing 21/17, 21/7. In the semi finals a win over Marie Jenson made way for a showdown with Danish number two and second seed Josephine Van Zanne. Kirsty came through a very tough and physical match 21/15, 19/21, 21/16 to win the title.

Rebekka Findlay lost out in the first round of the singles to Linda Nafe of Germany 18/21, 21/12, 6/21 and teamed up with Kirsty in the girls’ doubles. The pair lost to Celine Juel and Mette Paulsen 21/18, 21/17 before the Danish couple eventually won the title.

Josh Neil of S3 was seeded 9/16 in the under 15 boys' singles. Josh played brilliantly to come through 3 very tough matches and reached the final where he lost out to top Finnish player Ikka Heino 13/21, 17/21. An outstanding start to the season as Josh aims for the Danish Junior in October 2009. Josh teamed up with Adam Hall in the under 15 boys' doubles where they reached the quarter finals before losing to eventual champions Rasmus Eigtved and Victor Svendson 21/18, 19/21, 7/21. In the singles Adam lost out to top seed in a long 3 set match.

Kirsty, Rebekka and Josh were all supported at this event by BADMINTONscotland Junior High Performance Group and accompanied by Head Coach Diana Koleva and National Head Coach Julie Hogg. Congratulations to all four players for a fantastic start to the season.

Off to Belgium!

Recently, former GSoS High Performance Badminton coach, Alan McIlvain contacted me and offered me a unique opportunity to go across to Belgium for a month and train with the Belgian national team and play a few tournaments with one of their under 19 players.

I will be leaving on 20 August 2009 where I will travel to Germany to play Langenfeld with Ineke Decoster from Belgium. From there I will be travelling back to Belgium where I will train for the remainder of the month. In between training I will be playing in a tournament in Holland, the Belgian International and the Belgian Junior.

I will arrive home on 21 September 2009, perfect timing to start celebrating life as a poor student (Fresher’s week), and obviously train for the upcoming Nationals in October 2009.

GB Talent for Kirsty

In mid June Kirsty Gilmour received a letter from Ian Moss, Performance Director for GB Performance Programmes, informing her that she has been badged with “GB Talent”. This recognition does not receive any direct funding however players will be given an opportunity to experience the GB training environment. In addition Kirsty will have access to many other areas that will support her development.

Most importantly, the inclusion in the GB system at this point is given to a small number of players who are deemed to have potential to progress onto GB Performance Programmes and achieve at the highest level in the future.

Congratulations to Kirsty on joining the GB Talent group. We very much look forward to supporting Kirsty to move forward in the future and achieve further selections within the National and GB structures.

Disabled Coaching Workshop

Coaches working with disabled badminton athletes converged on Glasgow School of Sport over the weekend of 16 and 17 May 2009 to take part in the first Four Nations Coach Education Disability Badminton Coaching Workshop.

The initiative, hosted by Glasgow City Council and supported by BADMINTONscotland, attracted participants from as far afield as Norway and Belgium as well as all parts of the United Kingdom with the two days of activities spanning all types of coaching activities.

All types of disability were catered for over the weekend which saw a mixture of fun play and a sharing of knowledge and expertise led by Welsh coaches, Lyndon Williams and Norman Greenhouse.

Ryan McDonald and Alan Oliver, the winner of a number of recent national titles including the Class 1 and 2 men’s singles at the Scottish Four Nations Disabled Badminton Championships held earlier this year (2009) in Largs, were also on hand to lend their expertise to players keen and willing to learn more about coaching the game.

Ryan and Alan are starting on their own coach education tutor pathway as part of an ongoing strategy by BADMINTONscotland to raise the profile of the sport among disabled players. Such initiatives include ensuring that more competitions and events are held, tutor groups being set up, while standardising the approach in respect to the support on offer to disabled athletes.

Hilary Atkinson, BADMINTONscotland’s Coaching and Events Manager, said “The weekend was a great success and is testimony to the fact that we are making good progress over the past couple of years in respect of raising the profile of the sport in relation to encouraging more disabled athletes to take up the sport.”

Badminton Ireland Coach Visits Glasgow School of Sport

I would like to thank the staff of the Glasgow School of Sport for providing the opportunity to visit their Centre of Excellence and to learn how the School has evolved.

The opportunity that is provided for young talented performers to incorporate sport with their academic studies is an excellent way for potential talent to be maximised. There is a very committed enthusiastic working team of coaches and it is very obvious that a special sporting atmosphere has been developed within the school. The players that have been awarded a place at the School are in a very privileged position having all the necessary sport and generic support services under one roof. I am sure the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow in 2014 will provide more drive and targeted goals for many of the progressing performers. I look forward to following the Glasgow School of Sport’s progress.

Josh Neil – Winner of Under 15 Home Nations

S2 pupil Josh Neill pulled off the win of his life at the Under 15 Quadrangular in Dublin, Ireland. Josh played some brilliant badminton to reach the semi-finals where he met National Champion Stewart Ferns. After four defeats this season Josh won the match 18/21, 21/16, 21/16 and set up a final with Ireland’s Jonathon Dolan. Jonathan had defeated English Number 1 Alex Lane in the semi-finals. Josh played really well in the final and won the title 23/21, 22/20. Josh has developed well this season and has another year in the Under 15 age group. His inclusion into BADMINTONscotland’s Junior High Performance Squad has, no doubt, had an influence in recent months.

To top off the weekend Adam and Mixed Doubles partner Sophie Morrison from Motherwell collected a third title. They faced a tough match against Hannah Morrison and Sean Leith. After some great rallies Adam and Sophie won the title, which was also Sophie’s third of the day.

Robert Clark showed great determination and composure to win through to last 16 before meeting second seed Andrew Mawbey from Longniddry and lost out in a hard fought three set match. Andrew then met Thomas Qua who had upset 5/8 seed John Clifford in the last 16. Thomas played very well and lost 21/18, 21/18 to Andrew and again showed improvement in his singles play.

Kirstie Baird reached the quarter finals of the Girls’ Singles playing well against second seed Sophie Morrison from Lanarkshire. Kirstie lost out in 2 sets on this occasion 21/16, 21/12. In the Girls’ Doubles Kirstie partnered West Lothian girl Abbie Moran to reach her first National semi-final. The girls lost out to Fiona Craigen and the promising Under 12 player Julie MacPherson.

Double for Kirsty in Under 17 Event

Kirsty Gilmour managed to hold off the competition from the other three Glasgow School of Sport players who reached the semi-finals of the Girls’ Singles. Kirsty faced Under 15 National Champion Rebekka Findlay and won through to play Fiona Archibald in the final. Fiona beat Robyn Glen who had played very well to reach this stage of the competition. In the final Kirsty proved too tough an opponent for Fiona and won the title in two sets.

Fiona Archibald and partner Emma Gallacher upset the seeding with a semi-final win over top seeds Kirsty Gilmour and Kirsty McGlynn. This set up a final match against Caitlin Pringle and Emma Cook. Unfortunately for Fiona she had to settle for a second silver medal and lost out in a three set final.

The Mixed Doubles had more representation from the School of Sport where Kirsty and Edinburgh partner Michael Campbell beat top seeds on the way to the final before meeting Patrick McHugh and Emma Cook. Kirsty and Michael had a rocky start but eventually saw off a stiff challenge in three sets. Patrick had earlier won the Boys’ Singles title when he beat Gregor McVean in three sets. Gregor came through a tough field with some good players on the Saturday to face Stewart Ferns from Kilbockie. Gregor won the match to set up a final in which he never really settled into a rhythm.

Other notable wins in this age group came from Under 14 players Josh Neil and Gregor McVean. Josh had a great win against top seed Craig Morrison in two sets while Jordan beat Scott Campbell in round two. Ben Torrance also pushed Gregor all the way and lost out 22/20, 22/20.

Coaches Lead the Way!

Finally, congratulations to former pupil Kenny Young who won his first singles title with a three set win over Martin Campbell. Martin had beaten Stephen McPhail in the semi-final and pushed Kenny close in the final. From a School of Sport perspective it is great to have good players like Kenny and Stephen involved as coaches within the programme.

Badminton Team Review: August – December 2008

Glasgow School of Sport badminton players have been involved in a busy programme and have given some great performances and gained valuable experience along the way. There are currently 26 players involved in the programme made up of 3 groups. There are 7 players in years 1 and 2 that train together, years 3 and 4 train together with 11 players and years 5 and 6 train together with a total of 8 players. During training the players have access to the coaching team to ensure that they develop to their full potential. The programmes aim to prepare players for selection to national squads and teams. Players such as Kirstie Baird, Robert Clark and Thomas Qua, all S1 pupils, through to Kirsty Gilmour, Rebekka Findlay, Kaity Hall and Lisa McMullen have all been involved in international events this season.

At National Level, players from Glasgow School of Sport have amassed 6 titles from a possible 10 available at under 15 – under 19 championships and have had representation at UK School Games in the form of Kirsty Gilmour, Fiona Archibald, Gregor McVean who all won medals at this event. National Squad representation has allowed 15 players to join the national squad and at present Kirsty Gilmour is the sole representative currently involved with BADMINTONscotland Junior High Performance Squad.

Links have continued with Alan McIlvain in Belgium as Kaity Hall and Lisa McMullen have self funded a week long training camp in December 2008 and there is an option to join Belgian players in the summer for a training camp.

On the competition front all players have benefited from their experiences at domestic events in Scotland and England as well as abroad. Highlights include Kirsty Gilmour winning 2 events at the National Championships under 19 while still aged 15, Rebekka Findlay capturing her first National Title in singles and Josh Neil and Jordan Gilvear also winning titles at the Nationals. In addition there were some good performances at the Scottish International from all our senior players. Andrew Gilliland made it through qualifying and performed very well in the main draw. Kirsty Gilmour also performed well in this event and reached the quarter finals of the main draw with partner Kirsten Geals. During the same weekend Kaity Hall and partner Catriona Lawlor were runners up in the Northumberland Junior under 19 event.

Finally Glasgow School of Sport ran a UKCC Level 1 Coach Course with 14 students, 7 of which are players on the programme from S6. All students passed their exams and are now capable and qualified to coach badminton. This is a great start to using the valuable experience gained during their short careers. Overall a very busy and exciting season so far and after Christmas we will gain momentum as players gear up for European Junior selection, Quadrangular selection and possible results to gain entry to National Team for UK School Games in 2009.

Thanks to all players for their continued efforts and enthusiasm to improve, develop and perform on a daily basis. Also huge thanks to the badminton coaching team of Iain Pringle, Lena Robertson, Kenny Young and Stephen McPhail. Finally thanks to Strength and Conditioning team within the School, Junior High Performance Squad, National Squad, Satellite Squads and individual coaches who continue to support School of Sport players.

As top seed, Kirsty beat Kirsten Geals of Mauchline 21/10 21/11 and then paired up with Kirsten to beat S6 School of Sport student Kaity Hall and partner Catriona Lawlor in 3 sets. Kirstie Baird wins first title

New S1 pupil Kirstie Baird recently won her first singles tournament at Under 13 level. Kirstie competed with other girls to lift the title at the SSBU Under 13 Singles event held at Wishaw Sports Centre on Saturday 27 September 2008. After winning all her matches Kirstie played Fiona Craigen in the last match. Kirstie suffered a nasty fall during the first few points and eventually came through in 3 sets. Congratulations to Kirstie from the Coaching Team at the School of Sport.

Both Thomas Qua and Robert Clark were in action at this event. Thomas ended the day ranked seventh while Robert was placed tenth. These events are great for players of this age and standard as it always ensure matches with players of similar ability requiring all players to be on top of their game. Well done to Kirstie, Thomas and Robert for their efforts at this event.

Gordon Thomson Selected to GB Elite Player Programme

Glasgow School of Sport would like to congratulate their Performance Coach Gordon Thomson on gaining entry to LEVEL F of the GB Badminton Programme. Gordon has worked very hard and has shown that it is possible to get results to allow progression through the GB system. Gordon will be considered for entry into the Scottish Institute of Sport and will look to relocate to Milton Keynes most weeks to access the quality sparring available with the best players in the UK.

Unfortunately Gordon will no longer be able to commit time to coaching at Glasgow School of Sport due to playing commitments. On behalf of all staff and pupils we would like to wish Gordon our best wishes in his future career and look forward to seeing some international results during the coming years.

Top English Juniors Visit GSOS

Glasgow School of Sport recently welcomed brothers Ben and Alex Lane to Scotland for some sparring and training. Ben and Alex are part of Badminton England World Class Start Programme and currently live in Exmouth, Devon. The boys are coached by their mum Sue, former English National Champion and ex England Internationalist and work within the framework in England.

It was nice to see School of Sport players training and sparring with the boys and can only strengthen the links between Scotland and England as we all embark on a new system under GB Sport. Ben and Alex attended badminton and conditioning sessions at the School of Sport and also took part in two training session organised by Glasgow City Badminton Satellite Squad under their coach Ray Stevens.

S6 Student Steven Byers reports from European Summer School 2008

“I have just returned from Ursynőw where I attended the European Summer School. I was lucky enough to be chosen by the Glasgow School of Sport who also paid half the cost towards the camp. Coach Alex Bird, Andrew Gilliland and Eilidh Ballantyne joined me in Poland as they were funded by Badminton Scotland to attend the summer school.

All in all the Summer School was a fantastic experience albeit very hard work. We were joined by other groups from different countries in Europe and as a result of this we met many new friends. As a whole group we trained twice during the day and at night there was usually an activity organised like swimming, indoor hockey and football where I was known as Ronaldo Byers! We also had a team tournament at the beginning of the camp and to end the camp there was a final singles tournament.

The training consisted of singles and doubles work. At the beginning we were split into nine small groups where we had the chance in the afternoon session to work on something we thought needed improvement in our game which for me was my smash which I feel is my weakest area. During the morning sessions before lunch we were given exercises to do which consisted of 2 versus 1 exercises, routines, skills work and physical work. In every session we completed a quality warm up and warm down as a whole group which helped recovery from the last session and also to have the ability to train a lot better in the following session.

The hotel was good but there was one downfall - the food! It wasn’t the best but it was all that was there, so we had to cope with it. I don’t want to see hotdogs for a very long time! Also, Andy and I were disappointed as they did not stock our Scottish Blend tea in the supermarket. I shared a room with Andy and we got on very well. We would watch CNN worldwide news as it was the only English speaking channel on television so we were up to date on what was happening in the world.

Overall the Summer School was an amazing experience. I would like to thank Alex, the coach who took us to the camp, as he was great and he had to put up with the three of us for a whole week. Also I would like to thank Craig Robertson and Ms. Porter for giving me the opportunity to attend the camp and also for paying towards the costs. I had a superb time and learned a lot to help improve my game.”

Home Thoughts from Abroad – Alan McIlvain reports from Belgium

“It has been 18 months since I left the School of Sport to take up the position as Belgian National Coach.

In that time I have visited 20 different countries, attended over 35 tournaments and probably trebled the size of my carbon footprint with the amount of flights I’ve taken and the miles that I’ve driven. (How educational is this? A famous poem as a title and some informative global warming points as well. Learning can be fun!)

For those of you that I haven’t already bored with the details of my job, let me give you a few relevant pieces of information.

Belgium is split into 2 parts, the Flemish region (where I work), and the Wallonian region (which is obviously not as good). The coach for the Wallonian region is a Dane called Sofus Rishiide and Sofus and I work together as joint National coaches.

Belgium is famous for its beer, its chocolate and for a small guy peeing in the middle of Brussels (a statue called the Manneken Pis). Fortunately for my athletic physique, I do not eat a lot of chocolate. Unfortunately for my athletic physique, I love beer almost as much as Homer Simpson.

Usually I work with a group of five senior players and most of my time is taken up with on-court training and coaching at tournaments. I also work with pupils from the Topsport School in Antwerp.

These pupils are in the last year of school and getting ready to move up to the senior programme where they will work with me five days a week. There are also two national squad training sessions during the week where all the best Belgian players join together.

Things have been going well since I arrived in Belgium. The players seem to enjoy the type of training I deliver (although the high intensity session still gets the same type of reaction that it got from everybody at the School of Sport ). They are also starting to get used to my many amusing comments and sayings that I know all of the School of Sport players loved and miss (aye right!) although they still struggle with my accent when I get too enthusiastic. I have to speak very slowly!

Results have also been good.

We have had a lot of success in the doubles disciplines with Wouter Claes managing to reach 7 International Series or Challenger Finals this season in mens’ and mixed doubles. This is more than he has achieved in the last 5 years. He also reached the quarter finals of the mens’ doubles in the European Championships, the first time that any Belgian player has reached that stage.

Nathalie Descamps also achieved an Olympic Qualifying position for the ladies singles (at the time of writing this, I am waiting to see whether the Belgium Olympic Committee will accept her for the team).

I would love to say that this success was all due to my brilliant coaching but it is really just the fact that the players have put in the hard work and been receptive to making changes in their technical and tactical skills.

One of the highlights of last season was when Belgium competed in the Sudirman Cup in Glasgow. As part of our preparation, the team had some training sessions at the School of Sport and all the players were extremely impressed with the quality of the facilities there. They were then delighted to find out that they had been adopted as the School of Sport players’ favourite team to support and really appreciated the screaming and cheering during their matches (even your screaming Miss Nathalie M.).

Since then I have had some School of Sport players coming to train with the Belgium squads and even managed to dump Steffi Annys and Severine Corvilain (Ladies Doubles National Champions) over in Glasgow for a week to give me some peace and quiet.

I do miss the School of Sport and everybody there (which is why I always come to visit when I’m in Scotland – whether you want me to or not) and believe that it is a fantastic place to develop as a badminton player and as a person. I ’m delighted to see that Craig Robertson and his team have continued to develop the programme and that it goes from strength to strength.

Hope to see you all soon.”

Aldo!

Yorkshire Team and Individual Event Under 14

A West of Scotland team consisting of several players from the Glasgow School of Sport competed in the annual event held at York Railway Institute. In the individual events Josh Neil won the boys’ singles beating Timothy Morris of Staffs 21/18 in the final. Josh and partner Ben Torrance reached the final but lost out to Adam Hall and Calvin Percival 21/6. In the girls’ doubles Rebekka Findlay and Heather Campbell won the title over Craweshaw/O’Sullivan 21/13.

On the Sunday, the West of Scotland Team went on to win against teams from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. After victories of 4-3, 5-2 and 5-2, the West of Scotland youngsters went on to play the semi–final against Surrey. Another 5-2 victory set them up for an all Scottish final against Lothian. It was to the delight of the coaches that the team gave their all and cruised to a 4-0 start winning both singles and two boys’ doubles. Lothian fought back taking the girls’ doubles but the West finished the day the way they started taking the mixed and with it the team gold.

Quadrangular Under 15 in Scotland

Kirsty Gilmour and Gregor McVean both S3 students at Glasgow School of Sport competed in the event held over 25 – 27 April 2008 at Scotstoun Badminton Academy. Bank of Scotland once again sponsored the event and continue to sponsor BADMINTONscotland at this level. The team event saw Scotland play Ireland, Wales and eventually England in the Final. A 10 - 0 win over Ireland and a close match with Wales at 6 - 4 set up the final. After some exciting matches and some very close contests the score ended in a 5 - 5 draw. Due to a count back on games difference against the other nations, England was crowned champions for 2008.

Kirsty Gilmour Strikes Gold

Kirsty Gilmour ended an impressive season in winning the Under 15 Individual event in Girls’ Singles. Kirsty met Ireland Ruth Roddis in the final and played very well to win 21/10 21/12. The singles final took place after the girls’ doubles final where Kirsty and Kirsty McGlynn lost out in a long match to England’s Sophie Sankey and Holly Smith 21/19 18/21 12/21. For Kirsty this was the last event of the season and completed a good month with wins in Aros Cup, Denmark and Under 17 National Championships in Girls Singles.

The Edna Gibb Award went to Kirsty on this occasion. The award is for the best performance by a Scottish player at the Quadrangular and is in memory of Mrs Edna Gibb who put so much into badminton through Scottish Schools Badminton Union.

Gregor McVean reached semi finals in boys’ doubles and mixed doubles before losing out to top English players. In the doubles Gregor partnered Mathew Carder losing to Aaron Cheng and Rhys Walker 16/21 7.21. In the mixed event Gregor McVean and Kirsty McGlynn came up against Rhys Walker and Sophie Sankey. After some great play the young English pair ran out winners 21/14 15/21 21/15. After 2 days of hard competition Gregor was drawn against Oliver Gwilt of Wales. After a promising start Gregor lost out 14/21 13/21.

Overall Kirsty and Gregor performed well at this event. The Quad is the first taste of International Team badminton and is a stepping stone onto Under 17, 19 and senior European events. BADMINTONscotland hosted an excellent event and will host the Under 17 Quadrangular in two years time.

Kenny Young Helps Lanarkshire Reach Premier B

S6 pupil Kenny Young played in the recent play offs for Lanarkshire in the British Inter Counties Championship. The team who won Division 1A competed against winners from Divisions 1B, C & D.

A first match against Hertfordshire was unlucky as the team lost 8-7. They went on to beat Kent 8-7 and then beat Wiltshire 10-5 on the Sunday.

The result will provide both Kirsty Gilmour and Fiona Archibald with great opportunities next season to compete for Lanarkshire as many of England’s top players play in Premier B for their respective counties. Congratulations to the Lanarkshire Team.

Josh and Adam share Under 13 Titles

Adam Hall managed a remarkable achievement by winning the National Singles title with a 21/19, 21/19 win over top seeded Josh Neil. Adam came through a tough match with Jordan Gilvear in the semi finals and then produced an outstanding performance to win the tournament. Adam who is still under 12 and can compete next year added this title to the under 13 mixed that he won last year. Josh Neil made up for the disappointment of the singles by competing in both doubles and mixed finals. Josh partnered by James Milton beat Adam Hall and Jordan Gilvear 21/18, 21/19 in a very tight match. Josh then went on to win the mixed doubles with partner Heather McPherson as they beat Jordan Gilvear and Lucy Nevin 21/17, 21/19.

Overall the Under 13 players from Glasgow School of Sport performed well and managed to win all the boys’ events. A special mention must go to Jordan Gilvear for an excellent effort in reaching 2 finals and 1 semi final. Callum Riddell partnered Highland’s Joshua Holder and was unlucky to lose in 3 sets to Euan Cameron and Fraser Whillans. In the singles, Callum reached the last 16 before losing out to semi finalist Fraser Whillans. Calum Stevenson lost out in 3 sets in the singles to Mathew Weglicki and in an unlucky match lost out in the doubles with Thomas Qua , who will start at the school in August 2008.

A first for Steven and Kaity

Steven Stewart overcame the odds and won the boys singles in the under 17 category. Favourite Paul Van Reitvelde was beaten by Andrew Gilliland which set up an exciting final. Steven won the first set 21/19 and Andrew came back with a strong 21/14 reversal. It was close by the middle of the third set, however Steven stayed ahead and won 21/15. It was a remarkable end to a great season for Steven and a nice reward for all his hard work. Kaity Hall also won her first National title in the Girls Doubles with long time partner Kirsten Geals. Kaity and Kirsten performed well to win the final 21/15, 21/15 over top seeds Kirsty McGlynn and reigning champion Gillian Sloan.

Image of Steven Stewart - Under 17 Singles Champion
Steven Stewart - Under 17 Singles Champion

Kaity and Steven teamed up to reach the Mixed Doubles final and compete against last year’s winners Paul Van Reitvelde and Gillian Sloan. After a shaky start Steven and Kaity took the eventual winners to a third game before going down in 3 sets. Other encouraging performances came from Rebekka Findlay in the girls’ singles and Gregor McVean in the boys’ even though both were playing above their age groups. Robyn Glen also showed promise in the girls’ doubles.

In the Singles event Kirsty Gilmour faced Under 15 National Champion Kirsty McGlynn. Kirsty Gilmour controlled the match to win 21/17, 21/14. Again a brilliant achievement for both girls as they also contested the under 15 championships this season and can compete for the forthcoming 2 years at under 17 level. If both perform well at the Under 15 Quadrangular in Scotstoun at the end of April 2008 there could be an interesting re-match.

Under 23

Kenny Young and Greg McLure were the only players from Glasgow School of Sport in this age group. Kenny lost out to Gordon Hoggan of Dunfermline in a 3 set semi final while Greg McLure lost in the first round to Jacob Van Den Berg. Greg formed a scratch partnership with Steven Doolan from Ayrshire and reached the semi finals.

Kenny partnered former School of Sport player Steven McPhail in the doubles. The boys reached the semi finals and had the better of Duncan Leith and Peter Hockey before losing in 21/13 in the 3 rd set.

Congratulations must go Stephen McPhail for winning the under 23 Singles title over Gordon Hoggan. Stephen still spends time training at the School of Sport and assists on a voluntary basis with the coaching of younger pupils. This signified a welcome return to form for Stephen as he continues to improve after a short break.

Kirsty Gilmour and Gregor McVean both in S3 have been selected to represent Scotland in the upcoming Under 15 Quadrangular which will be held in Scotstoun Badminton Academy on Friday 25 – Sunday 27 April 2008. Kirsty performed well in last year’s event which was held in England. For Gregor this is a well earned International call up after a successful season so far.

As this is a home event it is expected to be well attended with spectators and will be the first International outing for talented players at this level. Glasgow School of Sport coach Gordon Thomson will be in attendance as an International player and Bank of Scotland Ambassador to support this event on behalf of BADMINTONscotland. 3 Titles in Aros Cup, Denmark – Unbelievable!

Glasgow School of Sport joined forces with BADMINTONscotland and Glasgow City Satellite Squad to compete in the prestigious Aros Cup which is held in Aarhus, Denmark. This year countries including England, Germany, Holland, Finland, Norway, Hungary and Sweden competed alongside a very strong Danish entry in this International Junior tournament for under 13 – under 19 players.

Adam Hall and Josh Neil travelled to this tournament with British success earlier in the season and this was a chance for the youngsters to test their skills against top opposition. Adam and Josh playing together for the first time in International events beat a Danish couple first round and then came through 3 times over 3 sets to reach the final. In the quarter final Adam and Josh beat top Swedish pair Andreas Norrell and Daniel Ojaar 6/21 21/14 21/19. This set them up for the final against Danish Number 2 pairing of Peter Correll and Jonas P. Rasmussen. The boys continued their outstanding form and won the tournament 21/16 21/17.

Adam and Josh both won 2 matches to move through the group stages. Adam then lost to doubles finalist Peter Correll 21/17 21/13. Josh went on to beat Mark Caljouw from the Netherlands before losing in the quarter finals to Italy’s Randolf Dellenback 15/21 21/17 21/23. Both Adam and Josh performed very well. Josh had lost to the same player last year in a much easier contest. In the mixed doubles Adam paired with Anna Klinke who plays for the Greve BK near Copenhagen. They won their first game and then lost to a talented Danish pair in 3 sets. Josh partnered Isabella Sparre of Koge BK and reached the third round losing in 3 sets also.

Kirsty Gilmour travelling this time with Junior High Performance Squad continued her improved performances and Won the Under 15 Singles beating Danish Number 5 player Celine Juel 21/17 21/14. Kirsty had a good win over a Dutch girl in the quarter finals before winning in 2 sets in the semi final. In the mixed doubles Kirsty paired up with Tim Stranks of England and reached the quarter finals before losing to a Danish pair.

In the girls doubles Kirsty and Kirsty McGlynn reached the semi finals repeating their position from the Danish Junior Cup in October. After a very close first set of 27/25 the girls lost out 21/10 to Number 4 seeds of Line Koch and Emille Furbo of Denmark.

Kenny Young, winner of mixed doubles title last year paired up with Eilidh Ballantyne and reached the final of the mixed doubles at Under 19 level. They lost out in the final to top seeds Kristian Worm and Thilde Iverson of Denmark 21/12 21/16. This is encouraging for Eilidh as she will join the school programme in early June and hopefully this result will give her confidence to reach more finals next season. Kenny paired up with Danish player Philip Pavlowski won the under 19 doubles title with a win over Danish pair and top seeds Soren Gravholt and Kristian Worm in 2 sets. In the singles Kenny reached the semi final and lost out to Simon Baus Jenson of Denmark 21/16 21/17 after a very long day.

Overall the trip was encouraging for School of Sport players. Through the Satellite Squad Kaity Hall, Steven Stewart, Danny Leinster and Greg McLure all gained valuable experience. Adam, Josh, Kirsty and Kenny will have lasting memories of the Aros Cup as it’s very difficult to win events in Europe. For Kenny this will be his last event as a junior as Adam and Josh start their rise up the junior ranks.

Kenny and Kaity in quarters at Dutch Junior International

Sixth year students Kenny Young and Kaity Hall reached the quarter finals of the Dutch Junior last week in Haarlem, Netherlands. In the third round the pair beat top seeds David Horacek and Petra Hofmanova of the Czech Republic in the last 32 and then a pair from Turkey to reach the quarters. At this point Kenny and Kaity faced tough opposition from Malaysia, one of the Worlds top badminton nations. Kai Ming Chooi and Jing Yi Tee beat the scots pair 21/10 21/11.

In the singles Kenny reached the last 32 before running close to top seeded Malaysian Iskandar-Zulkarnian Zainuddin 19/21 21/17 9/21. A truly spirited performance that should give Kenny confidence for the future. In the ladies singles Kaity lost in the first round to a Dutch girl and Kirsty McGlynn lost out to Debbie Janssens of Belgium 11/21 13/21. The girls paired up in the doubles event and lost to Zykova and Perminova of Russia 19/21 15/21.

Overall a very useful event for Kenny to gauge his progress since last year’s event. For both Kirsty and Kaity this would provide a platform as they look to achieve selection to European Junior Team this coming season.

Under13 Boys Going for Gold

On completion of the final Gold event of the year Josh Neil, Adam Hall and Jordan Gilvear have been in dominating form as they share many of the titles from the six events held this year. BADMINTONengland have been responsible for Gold events in Milton Keynes , Sussex , Thornton , Nottingham, Sheffield and Cwmbran ( Wales ). With the exception of the event in Wales all of the other events attracted players from the Glasgow School of Sport.

The events attracted the best juniors from all over the UK and the standard of play is considerably higher and tougher than each of the home countries domestic events. Potentially many of these young players will go on to represent their countries as they get older and the Gold circuit is an excellent starting point for any future stars.

Under 13 Medallists Josh Neil, Adam Hall and Jordan Gilvear

Josh, Adam and Jordan have amassed a total of 31 medals at the events comprising of 15 Gold, 10 Silver and 6 Bronze. At the under 13 age level winning is not the main focus even though the three boys have had great success. The main focus fior the players of this age must be to develop the skills and attributes to enable them to compete on a top European level as juniors and eventually on to world level as they move through senior ranks. With the determination, dedication and desire to improve all three boys have shown they are willing to work hard to gain recognition in future and at a much higher level.

Congratulations to Jordan, Adam and Josh and we wish them every success as they move into a new age group next season.

Scottish Boys Continue Gold Success

Nottingham played host to the latest Badminton England Gold under 13 Event. The usual players of Adam Hall, Josh Neil and Jordan Gilvear represented the Glasgow School of Sport and were joined by James Milton of Mauchline. The seedlings were kind to our players due to their previous successes however Josh Neil, singles winner from the Sussex event was unseeded. Josh showed that seeding was of no concern and easily made his way through to the semi finals to play top seed Adam Hall. In the other half Jordan Gilvear managed to win through 22-20 in the quarter final after a very heated and emotional match.

Adam turned around a first set defeat to win through 11/21 21/17 and 21/16 while Jordan defeated Marc Sadler of Hertfordshire 21/15 21/17. Adam again came back from a set down with a gritty and determined comeback to win the tournament 11/21 21/17 and 21/16. This was a great performance from Adam who also won the previous Gold event in mid December

In the doubles event both couples played three set matches on route to the final showing the depth of English players at this age. In the final Adam and Josh were able to win the middle set while James and Josh came out winner’s 22/20 13/21 and 21/16. For both couples this was the second time that the couples had competed in three sets during gold event finals.

The mixed doubles saw the three Scottish players paired with top English players. James Milton partnered Serena Midha but lost in the group stages to the eventual semi finalists. Adam Hall, winner of mixed at the Thornton Gold partnered Yorkshires Natalie Chan-Lam. Adam and Natalie fought hard but lost out in a close contest to Eve O Sullivan and Sam Parsons from Warwickshire 19/21 21/11 and 21/16. Adam and Natalie show that they both have a great future in mixed doubles as they are both under 12 players. Josh Neil partnered Brittany Ashton and won through to the final over the top Welsh pairing. Josh and Brittany came back to win the final in the third set 21/16.

Overall a great performance from the boys winning the boys singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The last Gold event for under 13 will take place at Sheffield in February. This will be the final challenge for the boys prior to moving up to under 14 tournaments towards the end of the season.

Firstly Lisa and Kaity lost to Gemma and Mirium Beales 21/19 21/13. Kirsty McGlynn partnered Paul Van Reitvelde from Longniddry to win the mixed doubles event. A great performance led them to win the match in 3 sets against Catriona Lawlor and James Buffham from England . This came on the back of a great performance at the Belgium Junior where Kirsty and Paul reached the final.

With the Commonwealth Junior Games due to take place in Pune , India in summer this event formed part of the qualification events to achieve selection to the team. There are events such as Nottingham Junior u18 in February and the German and Dutch Junior in March which will also contribute to the selection events. Finally this is a great start to the selection process for the School of Sport players however the stakes will be even higher at the international events when the rest of Europe and Asian players arrive to compete.

August – December 2007 Review

Glasgow School of Sport badminton players have been part of the busiest programme to date mainly due to the increasing demands of competition required. Already players have competed in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, Turkey and of course the four home nations. The current programme has 26 players involved which are made up of 3 groups. Years 1 and 2 train together with 9 players, years 3 and 4 train together with 10 players and years 5 and 6 train together with a total of 7 players. During training the players have access to the coaching team to ensure maximum development. Overall training and competition programmes are in place to ensure each individual has an opportunity to maximise their potential with an aim of developing into players aiming to achieve National Squad and Team selection. From players such as Kirsty Gilmour, Kirsty McGlynn, Kaity Hall, Lisa McMullen , Steven Stewart and Kenny Young have all been involved at International level.

Links have been forged firstly with Belgium. This is of course down to Alan McIlvain (former High Performance Coach) at the School of Sport working as Belgium National Coach. Since the summer period School of Sport players have attended 2 separate camps in Belgium and we received a visit from two of their top girls for training at the school. In addition to this the Belgium National Team visited the School of Sport during the Sudirman Cup firstly to train and then also met some of our up and coming players. For the second year players from Glasgow City Satellite Squad attended the Vaestra Frulunda event in Gothenburg, Sweden. Finally new links were established with a French group in Castlenaudary near Toulouse. We are hopeful to host the group next season for a friendly match and competition in a Scottish event. As well as an exchange this proved a fine opportune it for our players to learn and practice their language skills.

On the competition front all players have benefited from the experiences at domestic events in Scotland and England as well as abroad. Highlights include Kirsty McGlynn winning 3 events at the National Championships along with Kirsty Gilmour in Doubles and Gregor McVean in Mixed Doubles. Gregor also won doubles title at the Nationals at Under 15 level. Lisa McMullen won Under 19 Singles title at the Nationals which is an outstanding achievement as Lisa joined the school through a primary talent programme as a beginner and has worked very hard throughout her time at the School of Sport. At the under 15 Danish Junior Cup Kirsty Gilmour and Kirsty McGlynn reached the semi finals before losing to the eventual winners. Kirsty Gilmour won through to the quarter finals before losing to Danish No 2. Finally in Sweden Josh Neil was runner up in Vaestra Frulunda under 13 singles event.

In England, Kirsty Gilmour won Singles and Doubles at the Under 17 Gold event held in Bristol. Josh Neil, Adam Hall and Jordan Gilvear have all equipped themselves among the very best in Great Britain with wins in many of the under 13 Gold Challengers. Overall the competition results are only an indication of how the players are progressing, however this is a small part of their development as they strive for success at senior level.

On the training courts all players have benefited from the summer programme and continue to work on all aspects of their game. 1st Year pupils normally have 9 – 10 hours training per week, 3rd years have 10 – 12 hours training per week and 5/6th years have in excess of 14 hours per week. This is carefully worked around their education requirements and the first half of the season has gone smoothly with exams starting in early January 2008.

New entrants for August 2008

The annual Open Day was held on Saturday 24th November 2007 for entry to the School of Sport in 2008. Over 250 people came along to Bellahouston Academy from all over Scotland including the Isle of Lewis, Inverness, Mauchline, Stirling and Haddington. It was the busiest School Open Day in history and led to applicants applying for places next year. The selection process for badminton includes a specific trial day mainly for entry into first year which is held in early January. All entries into years 3, 5 and 6 are expected to have prior playing and competition experience and along with the first year applicants are then selected to further trials and interviews to secure places starting in August 2008.

What’s in store for 2008?

The second half of this season will start differently for Kirsty McGlynn and Kirsty Gilmour as they will attend the Commonwealth Games Camp in early January as the council outline plans for the teams going to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India during 2008. The events in England at Challenger level in all age groups, domestic events and International events will all widen the opportunities for School of Sport players during the second half of the season. Top events in Belgium, Denmark, Holland and Germany will provide top opposition for the players.

As players strive to represent Scotland selection will be on the minds of many. There is Under 17 and Under 15 Quadrangular (U15 in Scotstoun), qualification to Commonwealth Youth Games will provide tough opposition for the players and may play a spring board to represent Scotland at next years European Junior Championships. In addition to competition School of Sport Players will continue to reach standards to attain National Squad, Team and BADMINTONscotland’s Junior High Performance Selection.
