Three Titles for Darren at GSoS Under 15
07 January 2012 saw the annual Glasgow School of Sport Under 15 badminton competition take place. As the School of Sport’s intern I was asked to come along and help out with the day’s events. High Performance Coach Craig Robertson has asked me to report on my findings from the day.
I am a graduate of Sport and Exercise Science from Edinburgh Napier University and I am now studying on the Scottish Internship Certificate Course at Dundee University where I was accepted for the internship with the School of Sport. My time at the school has been split between each of the school’s five sports and the strength and conditioning team.
When I was asked to come along and help out with the event I thought it was a great idea and I hoped I would gain a deeper insight into how badminton competition works. What's more, I thought it was a good opportunity for me to see not only the School of Sport pupils perform competitively but I also hoped I would get a chance to see the talent we have across the country.
My day started at 8:30 am to help with the finishing touches of setting up before the competitors started to arrive. There were 66 entrants from across Scotland competing so it was important that we were ready to go. The first matches started at 9:00 am, and from then on the day ran very smoothly and efficiently, which was important as there were a lot of matches to be played. From the very first match the standard of play was excellent, and it got better and better as the matches got tougher and tougher. There are a lot of young, naturally talented players out there, with a real love for the sport.
The competition was great, and so were the competitors. The matches over the course of the day were played to a high level by each and every player, and it was really exciting to watch. I was also extremely impressed by the professional behaviour conducted by the players. It was announced at the start of the day that if there were any disputes to bring them to the table and the officials would try to solve them, however, there was not one throughout the whole day. All the players showed great sportsmanship and were outstanding ambassadors of the country and sport.
One thing I noticed, that I had completely forgotten about from my time competing at tennis competitions, and something that I had never really thought about before was the sheer patience and dedication of the parents. It was an extremely long day but the hall was still packed throughout with proud parents rooting for their children to win and it was great to see such immense support. Something that is really important if we want to produce world class players.
The day carried on without a glitch, however, as there became fewer matches to play they became longer to finish, which is obviously to be expected. When it got down to the last eighteen games to play, things started to slow a bit more, as there was rest time to be adhered to and there was only something like seven players left in the competition across the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Nevertheless, the players carried on producing some excellent badminton and the day came to a successful close.
Congratulations to Boys’ Singles (and treble) winner Darren Reid, Girls’ Singles winner Cara McCulloch, Boys’ Doubles winners Darren Reid and Alistair Orr, Girls’ Doubles winners Gemma Wright and Eleanor O’Donnell and Mixed Doubles winners Darren Reid and Toni Woods.

GSOS Under 11 Competition
Following on from the Under 15 event, 35 players from across Scotland arrived to compete for the Under 11 titles. The aim of the competition was to provide an opportunity to compete against other opponents and make the journey worthwhile in terms of number of matches. The talent on show was of a very high standard and led to many hard fought matches. In the Boys’ Singles, Josh Mackay outplayed Doubles’ partner Adam Pringle in the final with a scoreline of 21/14. Josh and Adam then teamed up to take the Doubles’ titles with a 21/12 win over Michael Farnood and Colin Taylor.
The girls showed some great play and determination as the two Rachel’s, Sugden and Andrew, reached the final. Rachel Sugden won her first singles title at GSOS with a 21/16 win. In the Doubles event all five pairs played in a group system with eventual winners Rachel Sugden and Abbie Nicol going undefeated and Rachel Andrew and Maria Leith taking silver medals.
All competitions at this age group are played in groups with the top two players reaching the main competition and all other players in the group competing in the B events. On this occasion Joshua Apiliga beat Alexander McGarrie in the Boys’ Singles. Seamus Russell and Lewis Gilvear beat Fraser Siu and Callum Smith to take the Boys’ Doubles while Maria Leith beat Kiera Waddell in the Girls’ event.
Glasgow School of Sport would like to thank the many parents and volunteers who gave their time at this year’s competitions, not only the Under 11 and Under 15 but the events earlier in the season.

Under 13 GOLD – Lisburn, Northern Ireland
Five first year pupils from Glasgow School of Sport, travelled to Lisburn in Northern Ireland to compete in an Under 13 Gold tournament. The day started with boys and Girls Doubles events. After some tough pool matches Stewart Dyce and his partner, Steven Stallwood from England, managed to win their pool and reach the final, beating fellow pupil Scott Waddell and his partner Ciar Pringle along the way. In the other pool, Matthew and Christopher Grimley finished runner-up, after losing a tight match to Nhat Ngugen and Paul Reynolds from Ireland. The Irish pair then went on to win the title, beating Stewart Dyce and Steven Stallwood in the final. In the Girls’ Doubles event, Sarah Sidebottom and her partner, Lauren Middleton from Dundee, also faced some tough, competitive games and were unlucky not to progress from their pool.
The Boys’ Singles event provided some excellent matches for the School pupils, resulting in some good performances from the players. Scott Waddell and Stewart Dyce competed very well in their pool games but faced some tough opposition from the Number 1 seed and eventual winner, Matthew Lightbody of Ireland. Matthew and Christopher Grimley were winners of their pool, which meant they made it through to the semi-final stage on the Sunday morning. Matthew was drawn against Matthew Lilghtbody, who proved to be too strong and beat Matthew Grimley in two straight sets. Christopher was drawn against Steven Stallwood of England for his semi-final and after a very competitive match Christopher won his semi-final in three sets. Christopher then played Matthew Lightbody in the final, who once again proved to be too strong for Christopher on this occasion and won in two straight sets, giving Christopher the silver medal. In the Girls’ Singles, Sarah Sidebottom competed well and reached the final by winning her pool, where she beat Helen Kelly of England in three close sets to take the gold medal.
In the Mixed Doubles, the final was contested by Matthew Grimley and his partner Helen Kelly and Christopher Grimley and his partner Lauren Middleton. Both pairs were successful in winning their pools, with Christopher and Lauren beating Ciar Pringle and Sarah Sidebottom at the pool stage. The final was very tight with Matthew and Helen winning the gold medal and Christopher and Lauren claiming silver.

Team Selected for Commonwealth Youth Games
Report from the Badminton Scotland website
Against the imposing backdrop of the Wallace Monument in Stirling, Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) today announced the 50 athletes selected to represent Youth Team Scotland at the fourth Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man from 7-12 September 2011.
Scotland will be represented in the badminton event by Matthew Carder, Josh Neil, Kirsty Gilmour and Caitlin Pringle.
Gilmour has already had a taste of Commonwealth action, having represented Scotland in the full Commonwealth Games in Delhi last October (2010). Neil and Pringle also had the chance to experience Delhi when both were selected to be part of the Achieve 2014 initiative, aimed at giving young players the opportunity to gain critical knowledge and experience of a senior multi-sport environment to assist their preparations for success in Glasgow (2014) and beyond.
The Commonwealth Youth Games concept, created by Scotland in 2000, and designed as an effective vehicle for developing young athletes and giving them an early experience of an international multi-sport environment, has a great track record of uncovering future champions at senior level, and Scotland is no exception. To date 47 Scottish athletes from a total of 200 have progressed from the youth to the senior Commonwealth Games team, with 11 going on to win a total of 18 medals for Scotland. Amongst the Scots to win medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, who came through the Youth Games include swimmers Hannah Miley and Robbie Renwick, shooters Jenifer McIntosh and Kay Copland, boxer Josh Taylor and weightlifter Peter Kirkbride.
It is anticipated that this positive trend will continue and a significant number of the 50 athletes who compete and win medals in the Isle of Man will go on to compete with distinction for Scotland at Glasgow 2014 and beyond.
Isle of Man 2011 is the first time the Youth Games have been held in one of the smaller Commonwealth nations, in line with the Commonwealth Games Federation’s policy to target countries unlikely to be able to host the senior Games. With a maximum of 1000 athlete places available and 69 of the 71 Commonwealth countries expected to take part, each country was allocated a fixed number of places and qualification standards were set accordingly in conjunction with each of the sports’ governing bodies.
The athletes, aged between 13-18 years, will compete for Scotland in all seven sports on the programme, with many entering multiple events: Athletics (9), Badminton (4), Boxing (5), Cycling (4), Gymnastics (6), Rugby 7s (12), Swimming (10).
Congratulating the team, Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of CGS said: “l am confident that we have selected an outstanding team to compete in the Isle of Man, and competition for the limited number of places has been fierce.
“Whilst winning medals is important, the major benefit of the Commonwealth Youth Games is the opportunity it gives to expose young athletes to this level of international competition in a multi-sport environment. It is also the first time that athletes experience being part of Team Scotland and the strong team ethos we engender.
“I am sure we will see a number of these new faces emerge again in Glasgow in 2014 when the next Commonwealth Games are held in Scotland. I wish them every success as they embark on their Commonwealth Games journey and I look forward to cheering them on.”
Amongst the team members unveiled today are gymnast Shannon Archer who at just 13 years of age is the youngest team member; badminton player Kirsty Gilmour who is the only athlete who has already attended a Commonwealth Games in Delhi 2010; and two members of the newly formed full-time Scotland Rugby 7s squad Adam Ashe and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne. A number of athletes are also fresh from success representing Great Britain at European and World junior and youth events including athletes Tom Holligan, Nick Percy, Zoey Clark and Kimberley Reed, swimmers Craig Benson, Gareth Mills, Emily Jones and Mark Szaranek and cyclist Grant Ferguson, whilst the boxers have taken on the best of British at the GB Youth Amateur Championships and acquitted themselves well with lightweight, Charlie Flynn, winning gold.
Also at the announcement, Louise Martin CBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “On behalf of sportscotland I would like to congratulate each of the athletes selected to represent Youth Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man. It is a fantastic achievement and is testament to all the dedication and hard work put in by the athletes, their families and their coaches and we wish them all the very best for the Games.
“The Commonwealth Games is particularly significant for Scotland, as it is the only major Games where we compete as a nation in our own right, and the Youth Games concept is also close to my own heart having been developed here in Scotland and adopted internationally as a positive opportunity for developing young talent.”
Recalling her experience of the Commonwealth Youth Games, Commonwealth gold medallist and World silver medallist at 400m individual medley, swimmer Hannah Miley added: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Commonwealth Youth Games at Bendigo in 2004. It is such a great opportunity when you are a young athlete to be part of a huge competition and also to interact with athletes from all over the world. I am always especially proud to stand up representing Scotland and no more so than in Delhi last year. I wish all Youth Team Scotland athletes the best of luck next month in the Isle of Man.”

Off to Sweden (by Josh Neil)
Having done four years at the Glasgow School Of Sport, starting off as a very small inexperienced player in first year, playing mostly Scottish tournaments and looking up at the fifth and sixth years wishing that I could be as good as them some day, I have come to realise I would have never dreamt of the opportunity that I have managed to create now without the Glasgow School Of Sport. It is the place where my determination to succeed was established and due to the environment I was in I was always motivated every day to train as hard as I possibly could just hoping that one day I could do something different to all of the other players and try to stand out from the crowd. Since first year I have been given so many opportunities to compete outwith Scotland in places like Denmark, France, Sweden, Slovenia, England and Germany. Without the School of Sport funding I would never have been able to afford to go to these tournaments.
When we go away to these tournaments and get results people start to recognise us and luckily for me I managed to get to quite a few European finals and therefore people started talking to me and I became friends with a lot of people from different countries, one of which is a very close friend of mine named Julia from Sweden. She is the person that started her coach talking to me who managed to offer me a place at the club named Fyrisfjadern which is currently the top badminton club in Sweden. I will be living at the club where they have apartments and will also be going to school there where I will be learning in English on an IB programme. I will be training two times per day, once before school and once at night time with the seniors at the club, which I hope will help to improve my game massively. They have a very good setup over there as they have a team of physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists etc and both the club and the school will link to make sure I am able to combine both my school and my training which is a similar thing to the Glasgow School of Sport.
The reason I’m going to Sweden is basically to try something different from all of the other Scottish players as the Scandinavian countries have a very good reputation for their badminton, so if I train with them I would hope to improve at their rate and try and keep challenging them and getting to finals of European tournaments. This move will also help me mature as a person and become more independent which is what I need to do at an early age if I want to keep up with the Scandinavians.
I am very grateful that I am still able to play for the Scottish team which means I will probably be flying back and forth frequently to join the Scotland team. I have been selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man in September 2011 and I will be coming back to practice with my partners for this event.
I will miss the School Of Sport alot as they have done so much for me. It only feels like yesterday that I was starting the school as the four years have gone by extremely fast and I hope one day I can prove to them that it was worth spending money on me and putting a lot of effort on coaching me, and I hope to come back every so often to see the new up and coming stars - hopefully not beating me!
I know that I will not be able to thank the coaches Craig Robertson, Iain Pringle, Lena Robertson and the strength and conditioning coaches enough. They have always been there when I needed them but at least I know I’ll be able to say to them what Craig has been wanting me to be able to say since I was in first year - “I have given it my all and I don’t have any regrets!” - no matter what the outcome of my career is.
Finally I will report in the coming months from Sweden on my school, training, competitions and general life in Sweden.
Team Zambia Visit Glasgow for Pre-Games Camp
Some of Africa's leading sportsmen and women arrived in Glasgow for a high-performance training camp ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The Zambian delegation, which included badminton players Ngosa Chongo, aged 19 and Juma Muwowo, aged 31, as well as athletes, swimmers, coaches and officials were welcomed to the City's Scotstoun Stadium by the Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Redmond.
The three-week training camp is aimed at supporting athletes, coaches and members of the Zambian National Olympic Committee with their preparations ahead of London 2012. It has been organised by Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council and forms part of the City's commitment to leaving a lasting legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Glasgow has focussed on attracting Commonwealth nations for the pre-London 2012 training camps and is also looking forward to welcoming a delegation from Namibia next year.
During their stay in Glasgow, the Zambian players participated in the programmes at Glasgow School of Sport and Badminton Scotland’s National Squad at Scotstoun Badminton Academy.
The Zambian delegation used the accommodation at the University of Strathclyde halls of residence during their visit to Glasgow, to give them experience of an environment similar to an athlete’s village. They also experienced a visit to Edinburgh Castle, the new National Indoor Sports Arena, Tollcross Leisure Centre and a visit to meet boxing World Super Featherweight champion Ricky Burns.

After each seven minute period they move on to the next station and then each one in turn until they had completed all eight stations.
At the end of the competition while the scores were added up Jill O’Neill, Glasgow Life Badminton Development Officer, and some students from the Glasgow School of Sport gave a demonstration to the children.
Once the scores were added up each school received a certificate for taking part and the winning school children, Battlefield PS, were presented with a t-shirt each.
Everyone agreed they had a great time and hopefully many of the children will take up badminton in the future.

Aros Cup, Denmark
A small team from Glasgow School of Sport flew out to Aarhus for the annual Aros Cup. The competition is one of the best in Denmark and alongside the Danish Junior Cup attracts players from many countries including Croatia, England, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Scotland and of course Denmark. The Danish club system had over fifty clubs participating in the competition with a total of 331 competitors within four age groups.
Entry to the Aros Cup is restricted to International entrants and any Danish players who hold Elite or Master rankings. The ranking system in Denmark consists of age groups that often include competitions for Under 9 years all the way through to Senior. Each age group has a ranking with Elite being the top level, Master, A, B, C and D with competitions aimed at players within these levels.
As an International competition Aros is played over four days. Mixed on Thursday, Singles on Friday, Doubles on Saturday and all finals on Sunday. In general many top Danish players enter only two events with a view to performing well in their chosen events.
The Aros Cup is hosted by Viby Badminton Club which is based in Aarhus with a purpose built six court hall. To accommodate the 331 players, the organisers used another hall within walking distance consisting of twelve courts and the ten court club of Egelund which is around ten minute's drive from Viby.
In the Under 17 event Josh Neil and Ben Torrance both won through their groups and won their next rounds before moving into the quarter-finals. Josh had wins over Lasse Lindvald of Aarhus AB and Kasper Helsholt of the prestigious Gentofte club. In the last 16 Josh beat Kristopher Gisler of Ikast in three sets before losing to top seed and eventual runner up Mathias L Hansen of Herning BK. Ben won through his group with wins over Martin Humle of Hojberg and Mads Grill Mousing of Viby. Ben won his last sixteen match before losing to Patrick Buhl of Roskilde HBK. In the Doubles event Josh and Ben lost in their group 21/18 in the third against a very tough Danish couple.
At Under 15 level Adam Hall and English partner Harrison Simcock reached the quarter-finals of the Doubles where they met the top Swedish pairing of Alex Loung and Thai To 23/21, 21/18 after some great play from both pairs. Adam had a tough group in his singles winning one match and losing the top player Mikkel Enhoj of Lillerod BK.
With Denmark being such a force in badminton it is always a learning experience for players and coaches to attend the events held there. The three boys from Glasgow School of Sport were a credit to the school and competed well in all of their matches. After returning home there are no doubts on the competition level required to reach the top in Denmark and an eye opener for the young players with a view to returning next year to compete at the highest level. Results can be found on the Viby Badminton Club website.
