The boys’ singles saw some hard fought matches during the early rounds and produced some great play. Callum Macmillan and Alex Dunn upset the seedings by overcoming the top 2 seeds on the way to the final. In a nail biting finish Alex won 18-21/22-20/21-19 to take the title. In the girls’ singles Edinburgh’s Julie MacPherson won the final against doubles partner Abbie Moran with a fine display of play and very professional final from both girls. Julie and Abbie teamed up to contest the doubles final against Tammi Gibson and Holly Newall from Mauchline. Again all four girls played some great badminton with Julie and Abbie winning 21-11.

Finally the boys’ doubles final was the last match of the day. Second seeds Struan Ross and Andrew Thompson set off against singles winner Alex Dunn and partner Mark Leith. Struan and Andrew showed they were stronger on the day and ran out winners in a very close match 21-19.

Overall a total of 198 matches culminated with presentations of singles and doubles finalists. Deputy Head Teacher Kate Johnston and Deputy Head Teacher John Keatings both from Bellahouston Academy were on hand to present prizes and enjoy the high standard of badminton on display.

Special thanks must go to the organisers at the desk on the day, the parents and the volunteers who contributed to an excellent tournament. Thanks must also go to the café staff for some tasty food and snacks and to EG Sports for their contribution in bringing the shop to the tournament.

Finally, a special note of appreciation must go to all of the young players. The matches were played with great spirit and determination with an enjoyable element as well. No doubt many of these players will become junior internationalists and may eventually reach senior international standard. The talent of many players showed through and we can look forward to monitoring their development as they move through the age groups.
