James Higgins Selected for Scottish Under 20 Indoor International

Seventeen year old GSOS pupil James Higgins has been selected to represent Scotland in the under 20 age group at this weekend's indoor international. This is a tremendous achievement for James, only a month past his 17th birthday, to make this team with only one athlete selected per event. James improved his indoor 200 metres personal best only last weekend at the National Open, going top of the under 17 Scottish rankings in the process, this performance gaining him selection. It continues James's run of success. Since joining the School in 2011 he represented Scotland at both the British Schools and UK School Games. Congratulations also to GSOS coach David Watson for his work with James over the last year.

National Indoor Open Success

GSOS had a big entry at last weekend's National Indoor Open. We had 26 athletes competing over what was a very long day in which they managed 20 new personal bests from those 26 performances.

Given the high level of quality performances it is difficult to pick out the highlights but there a are a few who standout. Performer of the day was S2 pupil Abby Taylor who set two tremendous new personal bests running 8.73 seconds in the 60 metresand more impressively jumping out to 4.64 metres in the under 15 Girls' Long Jump to move to the top of the Scottish rankings.

Another going to the top of the Scottish rankings was S1's Bessong Ettchu who raced to a superb 8.54 seconds to top the under 13 girls' standings.

James Higgins and Joseph Amouzo also went top of the under 17 boys' 200 metres and triple jump rankings after their personal best performances.

West District XC Championships - GSOS Girls Win West District Title

Following their clean sweep of medals at the recent County Cross Country Championships the GSOS under 17 women travelled to Irvine to contest the West District XC Championships in confident mood. They arrived to find overhead conditions good and a testing course prepared that would tax all the athletes across the age groups.

Image of Brogan, Elizabeth and Stacie
Brogan, Elizabeth and Stacie

Our three girls, Brogan Wallace, Stacie Taylor and Elizabeth Edgar lined up focused and determined and set off aggressively as the gun went and the field raced off over the 4,400 metres course.

Immediately the individual medal contenders identified themselves as the GSOS duo Brogan Wallace and Stacie Taylor along with the Shettleston Harriers pair of Winters and Penrice quickly detached themselves from the main field in which Elizabeth Edgar was making a steadier start. This leading quartet continued to distance the main pack and it was obvious that the three individual medals would come from this leading group.

After the opening small loop Penrice was the first to struggle as she began to lose touch with the other three and she would ultimately have to settle for fourth. The leading trio however were still locked together as they approached the last 1,000 metres. It was at this point that Brogan began to force the pace and she slowly began to lead her and Stacie clear of the remaining Shettleston Harrier Stella Winters forceing her to settle for the bronze medal leaving the two GSOS girls clear to battle it out for the gold and silver.

Only 12 seconds separated the pair when they finished first adn second at the recent County Championships and Brogan had to pull out all the stops to eventually open up a six seconds gap to win the West District Championships, the first ever GSOS pupil to win a West District XC title with Stacie producing the run of her life to secure the silver medal, a fantastic result after only six months at the School.

The remaining battle was for the team title and Elizabeth was undoubtably doing her bit. After a steady start she continually moved through the field to produce her best ever result in a district championship with an eighth place finish. This trio of results (1st/2nd/8th) secured the team gold and the girls the County and District team double another first for the GSOS girls.

We had another few athletes competing on the day and Chris Watson, Amy Donnelly and Hannah Bartl all produced strong runs.

Chris Wins 6k Road Race

On Sunday, 27 November 2011, GSOS athlete Chris Watson competed in the St. Andrews Hospice 6 kilometres road race as his final preparation race before the West District Cross Country Championships on 10 December 2011. Chris ran a strong race always sitting in the lead pack before striding out and hitting the front just after halfway. Chris continued to extend his lead over the last 3 kilometres to end up a convincing winner and take his first victory in this event. This run will give Chris confidence as he chases an individual under 20 medal at the District Cross Country Championships.

Paul Wins Silver

Also competing over the weekend was under 15 boy Paul Harper who was representing Victoria Park City of Glasgow Athletics Club at the Dunbartonshire Cross Country Championships. Paul had his best run of the year so far to finish sixth overall in the Under 15 Boys' race and part of the silver medal winning team. Paul is finding his best form just at the right time as we head into the heart of the cross country season.

Medal Haul for School of Sport Athletes

The Glasgow School of Sport athletics programme had a number of athletes competing in the various County Cross Country Championships which took place last weekend. In total we had seven athletes in action and everyone returned with a medal.

Pride of place goes to our Under 17 Women's team of Brogan Wallace 18.44 (Gold), Stacie Taylor 18.56 (silver) and Elizabeth Edgar 19.43 (bronze) with a clean sweep of the individual medals and collectively winning the team Gold in the Renfrewshire County Championships. Well done girls, a great warm up performance prior to next months West District Championships!

Image of Brogan, Stacie and Elizabeth

Also competing in the Renfrewshire's was Ben Stafford. Ben is only 17 but has to compete in the Under 20 category and they have to run against the senior men over 6 miles in this event. This was Ben's first ever outing over 6 miles cross country but undaunted he raced aggressively throughout ending fifteenth overall and second under 20 winning him the silver medal.

Another athlete who was racing over the longer cross country distance was 18 years old Chris Watson who raced the Lanarkshire counties. Chris also had a great debut with a fine fourth place overall and first under 20 earning him the gold medal. This performance followed on from his great run in the schools relay and new personal best in the 800 metres showing great fitness over a great spread of events and distances.

Finally we had two under 15 girls, Amy Donnelly and Hannah Bartl, competing in the Ayrshire counties. Both girls had really good runs with Amy winning the individual bronze medal and the two girls combining with another Kilmarnock Harrier to wing the team silver medal.

Scottish Schools Road Relay Championships

On Saturday, 12 November 2011, GSOS athletes travelled through to a sunny Grangemouth to contest the annual Scottish Schools Road Relay Championships.  We took our largest ever contingent with four teams participating.

Image of Leanne Findlay, Jordyn Phillips and Sueryia Aziz
Leanne Findlay, Jordyn Phillips and Sueryia Aziz

First into action were our 1st year girls' team of Leanne Findlay, Sueryia Aziz and Jordyn Phillips who put on a good show to finish thirteenth overall with Leanne posting the fastest individual time bringing the girls home in tenth on the first leg.

The next event was the Medley relay girls race where we had two teams entered. These teams must consist of two under 15 girls on legs 1 and 2 with over 15 girls on the final two legs. Both our teams got of to good starts with the "A" team well in contention with Amy Donnelly bringing us home in fourth place on leg one. Next up was Abbigail McInnnes who battled illness to complete the second leg in fifth place. This left our senior girls with some chasing to do and this they managed admirably with Stacie Taylor pulling us through to third on leg three and Brogan Wallace taking us through to secure the silver medal, the first GSOS girls team to medal in this event. Meanwhile our "B" team of Charli Shand, Alex Inglis, Hannah Bartl and Elizabeth Edgar were also putting on a great performance to finish tenth overall. Well done girls!

The final event was the Medley relay for the boys. Again we were targeting a medal, Christophe Abouem in his first race in GSOS colours got us off to a steady start on the opening leg, into leg two and Paul Harper started the process of pulling us back into medal contention gaining five places with a strong run. Into the senior legs and Ben Stafford also pulled us up five places and we began to believe a medal was on the cards with our anchor leg runner Chris Watson setting off in fifth place but still 30 to 40 seconds out of the medal positions. Chris ran a storming leg, the seconnd fastest individual leg of the day, to get us to within four seconds of third place on the line. Unfortunately we just ran out of time and distance to pull back a medal however it was a great effort by all four boys.

Inter-Regional Championships

The Glasgow School of Sport had a record nine athletes selected for the Scottish Athletics Inter-Regional Championships held at Wishaw Stadium on 27 and 28 August 2011. These championships are a team-based event with athletes selected to represent 8 different Scottish regions. The majority of our athletes were selected by Glasgow with a couple selected by the West Coast team.

Image of Stacie Taylor
Stacie Taylor

Over the day of competition we won 5 medals and our athletes set a number of new personal best times.  The pick of the performances on the day was Stacie Taylor who was selected by the West Coast in the 1500 metres. Stacie has been one of the major School success stories this year already improving by almost 20 seconds over the 1500 metres distance. However, she was still agonisingly short of breaking the 5 minutes barrier with a current personal best of 5.01.5 minutes and this inter-regional race was probably her last chance to achieve this milestone this season.

Stacie set off determined to stay with the leaders and managed this comfortably as they raced through the first 800 metres in 2 minutes 40 seconds, bang on 5 minutes pace, with Stacie safely tucked in the lead pack. However, the pace slowed slightly on the third lap and with 300 metres left Stacie knew she needed a big finish. This she produced, moving through smoothly into second place and finishing in a time of 4 minutes 59.5 seconds, a great silver medal and into 9th place overall in the Scottish under 17 rankings. This performance ends a tremendous introductory 3 months at the School for Stacie.

Our other medal winners on the day were the super consistent James Higgins, who will compete at the UK School Games next weekend, who took bronze over 100 metres and went one better with silver in the 200 metres, and another consistent medal winner Lewis Nicholson, who despite not being at his best, still took the silver medal in the shot putt. Our final medallist was Chris Watson over 1500 metres. Chris led his race for almost 3 full laps before being passed by the eventual winner but battled hard to the line to secure a fine silver medal running his second best time ever of 4 minutes 04 seconds.

Outside the medals the best performances came from Sophie Byers who was fourth in the 300 metres and Joseph Amouzo who was fifth in the long jump.

GAA Miler Meet

At the recent GAA Miler Meet, held at Scotstoun Stadium on 5 August 2011, the School had seven athletes competing. First into action in the Women's A race were Brogan Wallace and Stacie Taylor. This looked a very competitive race on paper and so it turned out. From the gun Brogan was straight into the leading group behind the pacemaker with Stacie content to sit further back in the field. As they progressed through 400 metres the field was still packed together with only a few seconds separating first from last. Through 800 metres and a lead group including Brogan had detached itself from the main pack where Stacie was still running strongly and starting to move through. Brogan, who had been left in front when the pacemaker dropped out, was now trying to push the pace along and there were four clear going into the final 200 metres and it came down to a sprint finish. Unfortunately Brogan's earlier efforts in front meant she had to settle for fourth place in 4 minutes 53 seconds. Behind her, Stacie was having a storming last 500 metres as she raced through the field to finish seventh in a new personal best time of 5 minutes 1 second, taking a full 5 seconds from her previous best time. Stacie who just joined the School in June 2011 has improved from 5 minutes 22 seconds, a massive 21 second improvement.

Next into action in the Men's B race were Lee Wilson and Chris Watson. Both of these athletes have been concentrating on 800 metres this season and were now moving up to the longer distance - Chris fresh from his National medal last weekend and Lee from a disappointing National performance. However, both adopted similar tactics on the night sitting towards the rear of the field in the early stages hoping to make up ground in the later stages. With 600 metres left both were still towards the back but now looking to move through. It was Lee who was first to show making a great move on the last lap to race through into fourth place before fading slightly in the last 50 metres and having to settle for fifth place and a new personal best of 4 minutes 1.16 seconds. Behind him, Chris left it even later to make his move charging through in the last 200 metres to almost catch Lee on the line finishing sixth in 4 minutes 1.69 seconds, also a new personal best, improving by around 5 seconds.

Next up were Amy Donnelly and Elizabeth Edgar competing the Womens's B race. Amy has been one of our most improved athletes his year but this wasn't to be her night finishing with a time of 5 minutes 20 seconds, a little down on her best. Behind her though Elizabeth was running strongly and beginning to show, on the track, the potential she showed over XC last winter as she finished with a time of 5 minutes 32 seconds, a new personal best time by almost 15 seconds.

Finally it was Ben Stafford's turn. Ben has improved his personal best by over 10 seconds this year  but struggled on the night to finish with a time of 4 minutes 25 seconds.

July 2011

Glasgow Schools Multi-Event Championships

At the Glasgow Schools Multi-Event Championships the Glasgow School of Sport had four athletes competing. We had three girls, Hannah Bartl, Casey Alexander and Alex Inglis and in the under 15 girls Morgan McKinnon.

The first year girls were competing over three events, High Jump, Shot Putt and 200 metres. The first event was the High Jump and all three girls jumped very well with Hannah equalling her existing personal best with 1metre 35 centimetres, just behind setting a tremendous new personal best of 1 metre 25 centimetres was Alex with Casey jumping 1metre 20 centimetres. Next up was the 200 metres where it was Casey's turn to shine running 27.1 seconds to set the fastest time overall with Hannah running 29.1 seconds and Alex 31.0 seconds. These combined results saw all three of our girls well in the medal hunt with one event to go.

The final event was the shot putt and Hannah threw a tremendous new personal best of 7.67 metres to clinch the overall title and Casey's 6.60 metres was enough to win the silver and with Alex throwing 6.10 metres she finished sixth. This achievement, with all of the athletes in the top six and winning two medals is tremendous and credit must go to all three girls.

Our other competitor was Morgan in the under 15 girls category who was competing over Shot Putt, High Jump and 800 metres. Their first event was the shot putt where Morgan threw very well out to 7.52 metres to win the first event. Second up was the High Jump, not Morgan's favourite, however she was inspired and jumped a new personal best of 1.30 metres. However this was not enough to hold onto the overall lead and it all depended on the final event, the 800 metres. Morgan set off steadily and then produced a great second 400 metres to surge through the field in another new personal best of 2 minutes 43 seconds, an improvement of 8 seconds on her previous best. This left an anxious wait for the overall results where Morgan had to settle for the silver medal after a great competition.

Scottish Schools Track and Field Championships

The Glasgow School of Sport athletes had their largest ever entry in the Scottish Schools Track and Field Championships and also achieved their best ever medal haul. Over two very competitive days the School managed seven medals, including three gold.

The pick of the medallists were S3's Claire Anderson who scooped three medals including two gold and S5's James Higgins who won two medals with one gold.

Image of Claire Anderson
Claire Anderson (in the centre)

Claire, one of our newest recruits, showed her undoubted potential over three events with great victories in both the 100 metres and long jump and just narrowly failing to win the 200 metres taking the silver medal. James also showed his ability over two events with gold and a new personal best in the 100 metres of 11.29 seconds and silver in the 200 metres.

The other medals came in the Endurance events with S5's Brogan Wallace scooping the bronze medal in the under 17 girls' 1500 metres and S6's Lee Wilson taking the bronze in the over 17 800 metres in what will be his last race in the School colours.

Image of Brogan Wallace
Brogan Wallace (to the right)

Behind the medallists there were lots of new personal bests and good performances across all the athletics disciplines. In the under 17 boys' Triple Jump Joseph Amouzo was fourth just missing a medal by 2 centimetres jumping a new personal best of 12 metres 20 centimetres. Also fourth, just missing out on a medal was Ingles Lumfuankenda in the under 15 long jump.  Fresh from her multi-event medal the previous week Hannah Bartl continued her improvement with a new personal best in the under 14 girls' shot putt.

Other personal bests came from Ben Stafford and Chris Watson, ninth and sixth respectively in over 17 boys' 1500 metres - Chris also made the 800 metres final finishing sixth again, Abbigail McInnes in both the 800 and 1500 metres, Stacey Taylor with sixth in the 1500 metres final, Amy McLachlan under 17 girls' 300 metres hurdles , Caitlin Vaughan in over 17 girls' 400 metres and Morgan McKinnon who qualified for her first ever Scottish final in the girls' 75 metres hurdles.

Special mention also for Sophie Byers who ran a tremendous new personal best in her heat of the girls' 300 metres only to injure her back when warming up for the final and missed the opportunity to challenge for a podium place. Also deserving of a mention is Casey Alexander who ran three great races in qualifying finishing fifth in the under 14 girls' 200 metres.

Others to compete well were Abby Taylor, Alex Inglis, Amy Coyle, Hannah Jenkins, Paul Harper and Jade Barclay.

Scottish Age Group Championships

The Glasgow School of Sport had a very successful two days of competition at the Scottish Age Group Championships on 30 and 31 July 2011. These were the national championships for under 16, under 18 and under 20 athletes and the School was well represented across the age groups.

Over the two days we won a fantastic 8 medals including 3 golds.

Image of Joe
Image of James
Joe
James

Our star performer, amongst many outstanding performances, was undoubtedly James Higgins who raced to victories in both the under 18 boys’ 100 metres and 200 metres. James who has had a very successful summer and just returned from representing the Scottish Schools at the British Schools International also set two new personal best times of 11.22 and 22.37seconds.  These results will gain James selection for the Scottish Celtic Games team and also confirm his selection for the UK School Games. These representative honours will cap a fantastic season.

Our other gold medallist was Claire Anderson who won the under 16 girls’ 100 metres in a fast 13.07 seconds. Claire one of our newest recruits, has settled in nicely and is learning fast. She has great potential and we look forward to celebrating more successes in the coming years.

Image of Ingles
Image of Chris
Ingles
Chris

The other medal winners were in the jumps, throws and endurance spheres. In the under 18 girls’ 1500 metres, Brogan Wallace, National Champion at under 15 last year, was stepping up into the under 18's and lined up in the final as the youngest athlete in the field. The race set off at a terrific pace and Brogan followed the two early leaders as they pulled clear of the chasing pack.  She raced hard throughout to secure a tremendous silver medal in a new personal best time of 4 minutes 50 seconds. This result confirms her selection for the UK School Games and she will be a reserve for the Celtic Cup International. Also winning an Endurance medal was another of our new athletes, Chris Watson, who qualified smoothly for the under 18 boys’ 800 metres with a tactically smart heat performance. In the final Chris was always in the right position and was poised on the shoulder of the leaders with 200 metres to go but eventually had to settle for the bronze medal in a brisk 1 minute 58.8 seconds.

Finally, the event moved into the jumps arena where we took our final two medals. The first event of the Championships was the under 16 boys’ long jump where we had two competitors, Ingles Lumfuankenda and Joseph Amouzo. This turned out to be a fantastic competition overall with 5 or 6 boys continually improving their distances and swapping positions particularly in the last round. It was in that last round that Ingles secured his silver medal with a new personal best leap of 5 metres 97centimetres. Unfortunately Ingles's jump pushed Joseph out of the bronze medal position. He had jumped into a medal position with a new personal best of 5 metres 85 centimetres in the previous round.

Image of Brogan
Brogan

However, not to be disappointed, Joseph returned later in the day to secure his own silver medal in the under 16 boys’ triple jump jumping out to 12 metres 15 centimetres despite the fatigue from the earlier 6 jumps in the long jump.

Our final medallist was in the throws arena where Lewis Nicholson threw out to 12.57 metres to secure the bronze medal in the under 18 boys’ shot putt. It was a great performance in a competitive event.

Outside of the medals there a number of other good performances particularly from Sophie Byers who was sixth in the under 18 girls’ final. Despite struggling with a niggly back injury Sophie competed well in both races. Elsewhere Mahad Ahmed on his return to competition was a solid fourth in the under 18 boys’ long jump just ahead of Jonny Faulds who jumped out to a new personal best to take sixth place. In the endurance races there was a great new personal best performance from Stacie Taylor who took sixth behind Brogan’s silver medal in the under 18 girls’ 1500 metres and a seventh place finish for 14 year old Amy Donnelly in the under 16 girls’ 1500 metres.

Also worth a mention was School graduate Jade Barclay who won the silver medal in the under 20 women's 400 metres.

Scottish Schools Multi-Event Championships

At the Scottish Schools Multi-event Championships the Glasgow School of Sport had only two competitors, however both competed with distinction. The two girls were S1 Hannah Bartl competing in the First Year Girls' Triathlon and S2 Morgan McKinnon who was competing in the Under 15 Girls' Pentathlon.

Image of Hannah on the podium (left)

Hannah was first into action Jumping 2.28 metres in the High Jump, following up with 7.70 metres in the Shot Putt and finally a very good 1 minute 57 seconds in the 600 metres which was good enough to earn her the silver medal. This was a tremendous result and the best performance ever by a Glasgow School of Sport pupil in this competition.

Image of Morgan running in the 800 metres (yellow vest)
Morgan running in the 800 metres (running in second place)

Next up was Morgan, who was competing over five events - High Jump, Long Jump, 75 metres Hurdles, Shot Putt and 800 metres - a thorough test of technique and stamina. Morgan competed really well all day setting new personal bests of 1.21 metres in the High Jump, 4.49 metres in the Long Jump and 2 metres 51 seconds in the 800 metres to finish a very creditable fifth overall. Morgan has been one of the School's biggest improvers this year and this result demonstrates that.

Scottish Air Cadets National Cross Country Championships - 6 March 2011

On a day when the majority of the Glasgow School of Sport athletes were competing indoors there was one exception. Elizabeth Edgar was competing at the Scottish Air Cadets National Cross Country Championships in Livingston. Elizabeth, still in the junior ranks, raced in a combined junior/senior race over a tough three mile course. Straight from the gun Elizabeth dominated the rest of the field to run out a convincing winner almost 1 minute clear of the rest of the field.

This victory qualifies Elizabeth to race in the British finals later in March 2011 where she is hoping to make it onto the podium.

National Age Group Championships - 5/6 March 2011

The Glasgow School of Sport athletes completed their indoor competitive season at the National Age Group Championships at the Kelvin Hall over the weekend 5/6 March 2011. This competition, spread over two days, saw Under 13, 15, 17 and 20 athletes all competing for national titles.

Saturday, 5 March 2011, saw the Under 17 and Under 20 athletes first into action and the School managed to scoop two medals. The undoubted top performer was Under 17 James Higgins who triumphed in the 200 metres event. James cruised through his heat and semi-final to progress to the final. James, already Scottish Schools 200 metres champion, blasted out of the blocks to a comprehensive win in a new personal best time of 22.99 seconds. Earlier in the day James had made it through to the 60 metres final where despite another new personal best time of 7.28 seconds he was just outside the medals. These two top level performances bring to an end a very successful indoor season for James which sees him ranked Number 1 in Scotland at Under 17 200 metres.

The School's other medal on the Saturday came in the Triple Jump. S3 pupil Joseph Amouzo competing as a first year Under 17 and also in his first ever triple jump competition leapt out to 11 metres 82 centimetres to secure the bronze medal. This was tremendous result for Joseph and reward for his dedication and hard work in training. Joseph also jumped 5 metres 33 centimetres later in the day for a new personal best in Long Jump.

Others competing on the first day were Amy McLachlan who made it through to the semi-finals in the 60 metres hurdles equalling her personal best in the process. Amy then returned later in the day to record a new personal best of 28.75 seconds in the 200 metres. Jade Barclay also had a good day. Despite fighting a heavy cold, Jade ran a new personal best in the 400 metres semi-finals before just missing a medal in the final as she finished in fourth place.

There were also good performances from Sophie Byers, Jonny Faulds, Mahad Ahmed and Lewis Nicholson.

The second day of competition saw our younger Under 13 and Udner 15 athletes swing into action. First up were our 60 metres sprinters and hurdlers. The pick of the performances here came from Alex Ingles who ran two personal bests in the 60 metres to make the semi-finals and also throw well in the shot putt finishing an agonising fourth. Also sprinting well were Abby Taylor and Morgan McKinnon who were doubling up with 60 metres hurdles. Both girls ran well in both events with Morgan running a new 60 metres personal best of 8.89 seconds and Abby setting a new personal best in the 60 metres hurdles and making it through to the final, where unfortunately a knee injury ended her day of competition. Another athlete participating in a number of events was Amy Coyle who competed in Long Jump/ High Jump and 60 metres as she prepared for a summer of multi-events.

The only medal won on day two came in the Under 15 Boys' Long Jump where Scottish Schools Champion Ingles Lumfuankenda won the silver medal this time round. Ingles had a disrupted pre-competition routine and never quite got to grips with his run-up on the day jumping out to 5 metres 61 centimetres just short of his previous best of 5 metres 66 centimetres.

There were a number of other good performers on the day including Charlie Shand who set a new personal best in the Under 13 Girls' 800 metres, Hannah Bartle in the Under 15 Girls' High Jump and 200 metres where she set a new personal best and Hannah Jenkins who set a new personal best in the 200 metres.
